On January 15, 2011 Draxler made his professional debut when he was substituted on for Ivan Rakitić in the 0-1 defeat against Hamburger SV on the 18th Bundesliga matchday in the 83rd minute . At 17 years and 117 days, he was the youngest Schalke player to have played in the Bundesliga . Three days after his Bundesliga debut, he signed a licensed player contract with Schalke until 2014 and was on the starting line-up for the first time in the following game at Hannover 96 (1-0) on matchday 19. Draxler initiated the 1-0 through Raúl and was replaced in the 58th minute by Christian Pander . He scored his first competitive goal for the first team shortly after his substitution in the extension of the DFB-Pokal quarter-final match against 1. FC Nürnberg when he scored "with a remarkable shot" in the 119th minute to make it 3-2. 15 February 2011 Draxler got its debut in European competition when he in the first leg in the knockout stages of the Champions League against FC Valencia in 78 minutes of Jefferson Farfán was brought on. He scored his first goal in a Bundesliga game on April 1, 2011 in the away game at FC St. Pauli , which was canceled shortly before the end when Schalke was 2-0 and was rated with this result by the DFB Sports Court on April 5. The DFL then decided to count the goals scored up to the abandonment as regular goals for the goal scorers. With his 1-0 goal against MSV Duisburg on May 21, 2011, he became the youngest scorer in a DFB Cup final and is the youngest player to have won the DFB Cup. He replaced the previous record holder Horst Trimhold , who scored for Schwarz-Weiß Essen in a 5-2 draw against Borussia Neunkirchen in 1959, as the youngest scorer in a cup final. Draxler's goal was then voted Goal of the Month for May 2011. At the end of the 2010/11 season , he had played 15 league games in which he had scored a goal. He scored once in three DFB Cup games.

For the 2011/12 season he moved up firmly to the professional squad. He and his team beat Borussia Dortmund in the 2011 DFL Supercup 4: 3 on penalties. Draxler played 30 games in the league (two goals and six assists). He was mainly used as a left winger. In the Europa League , Schalke was only eliminated in the quarter-finals against Athletic Bilbao . Draxler scored two goals in 13 games.

The 2012/13 season Schalke 04 played again internationally in the Champions League. The only game that Schalke lost was the second leg of the second leg against Galatasaray Istanbul , so the competition for Schalke was over. In the DFB Cup they were eliminated again in the round of 16, this time against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . With his goal to make it 1-1 in the game against HSC Montpellier , Draxler replaced Lars Ricken as the youngest German goalscorer in the Champions League on October 3, 2012 , but was in turn replaced by Felix Passlack on November 22, 2016 . In the game he suffered a Galeazzi fracture of his left forearm. Because of a torn muscle, Draxler only made 26 appearances in the Bundesliga in the 2013/14 season , scoring two goals and preparing seven goals. When he played against SC Freiburg on May 3, 2014, at the age of 20 years, 7 months and 13 days, he replaced Charly Körbel as the youngest player in Bundesliga history to have made 100 appearances. In the meantime, Draxler has been replaced by Timo Werner in this category . The group stage of the Champions League was successfully survived; Draxler scored three goals in six group games. Schalke 04 were eliminated in the round of 16 against Real Madrid , and in the DFB Cup against TSG Hoffenheim.

In the 2014/15 season , Draxler only played 15 games in the league (two goals) due to a red card suspension and a torn tendon. In the last sixteen of the Champions League, Schalke 04 were eliminated again in the last sixteen against Real Madrid, in the DFB Cup in the first round.

Draxler's contract ran until June 2018.

He played his first Bundesliga game for VfL on September 12, 2015 in a 0-0 draw against FC Ingolstadt . He scored his first competitive goal for Wolfsburg in a 1-0 home win on September 15 against PFK ZSKA Moscow in the Champions League group stage. In October 2011 Draxler was used for the first time in the U-19s , where he scored the goal to lead 1-0 in his second appearance in a 2-0 win against Montenegro.

In preparation for the EM 2012 , Draxler was appointed to the provisional squad of the German national team for the first time by national coach Joachim Löw . He made his debut in the A international match against Switzerland on May 26, 2012, when he came on for Lukas Podolski in the 62nd minute and prepared Marco Reus' goal to make it 3: 4. Nevertheless, Löw did not nominate Draxler for the final squad for the EM 2012 .

In five of the six tournament games he was used, only in the third group game against Northern Ireland he stayed on the bench. In the round of 16 against Slovakia he prepared the 2-0 and scored the goal himself to make it 3-0. He was then voted "Man of the Match". The team made it to the semi-finals and was eliminated by hosts France.

For the Confed Cup 2017 , Joachim Löw appointed Draxler as team captain of the German squad. He led the team to victory in the tournament and was named the best player of the Confederations Cup by FIFA after beating Chile 1-0 in the final . During the tournament he was used in all five games and scored a goal in the first group game against Australia .

Draxler's open letter to Russian football fans published on the DFB website in June 2017 was rated by Holger Gertz as an example of “the audacity” and “determination” with which professional football “distances itself from all ethical values” . "If someone doesn't want to criticize, why doesn't he at least refrain from making things so incredibly naive?" Asked Gertz.

Style of play

Draxler's “speed and his strength in one-on-one situations” are particularly valued. Draxler is mainly used on the left wing, but can also play on the right and on the "ten", where he was used in youth and "always felt most comfortable" there. Ex-trainer Felix Magath said of him: “Despite his youth he is very advanced when it comes to the rhythm of the game. He is very focused and not frivolous or thoughtless. Everything he does has a hand and foot. Receiving and taking the ball are exemplary, because he is further than some professionals. He plays cheeky and has confidence. And he brings the right train to the gate. You can tell in every phase of the game that he wants to score. That's why he's an unpleasant opponent for everyone ”. His shots reach speeds of up to 117 km / h.
