Thomas Tuchel (born August 29, 1973 in Krumbach ) is a German football coach and former football player . The former defender worked successfully as a youth coach for several years and was promoted to head coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05 in August 2009 . After that he was head coach of Borussia Dortmund for two years until May 2017 and won the 2017 DFB-Pokal . From July 2018 to late December 2020, he was head coach at Paris Saint-Germain , winning the French Championship twice , the French Cup onceand once the French League Cup . He has been Chelsea FC manager since January 2021 and celebrated the greatest success of his coaching career in May 2021 by winning the UEFA Champions League , for which he was voted FIFA World Coach of the Year .

Under the guidance of his father, Tuchel began playing football at TSV Krumbach and in 1988 switched to the youth team of FC Augsburg . On the side of Harald Gfreiter , he won the DFB-Jugend-Kicker-Pokal in 1991 and 1992 with FC Augsburg . In 1992 he joined the Stuttgarter Kickers and came to eight games in the 2nd Bundesliga . After he was no longer used in the first team in the following season, he left the club from Degerloch in the direction of Ulm. In the following years, Tuchel played for SSV Ulm 1846 in the Regionalliga Süd . After three years of being a regular part of the defensive line under coach Ralf Rangnick , he had to end his active career prematurely in 1998, the year he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga, due to a cartilage injury.

Beginnings in youth teams

Tuchel switched to the coaching bench in 2000. At VfB Stuttgart he coached the U-15 team and in 2004 he became an assistant coach for the VfB U-19 team. With the team he won the 2005 A-Junior Bundesliga title . He then returned to FC Augsburg, where he also worked as a coach and head of the youth academy in youth work.

In 2006, Tuchel completed his training as a football coach, which he completed with an overall grade of 1.4. On July 1, 2008, he moved to the youth academy of 1. FSV Mainz 05 to replace Jürgen Kramny , who had moved up to the professionals as an assistant coach . In 2009 he won the A-Junior title with the youth team.

From August 3, 2009, Tuchel was the coach of the professional team from Mainz 05, which had previously been promoted to the Bundesliga. His predecessor Jørn Andersen was released after being eliminated in the first round of the DFB Cup and internal disagreements. In the 2010/11 season , Tuchel and his team equaled the Bundesliga start record of seven wins in a row. With Mainz, Tuchel caused a sensation with modern, fast-paced and attacking football.

Immediately after the last game of the 2013/14 season , it was announced that Tuchel would be leaving the club a year before the end of his contract. However, his contract was not terminated, which would only allow Tuchel to move to another club if a fee was paid. The contract was suspended from June 15, 2014 to June 30, 2015. On 19 April 2015, Borussia Dortmund signed him for the 2015–16 season to succeed Jürgen Klopp , who had resigned . Tuchel received a contract with BVB that runs until June 30, 2018. On May 30, 2017, Tuchel announced the separation from the club at the end of the season in mid-2017. Although he had done a successful job with Borussia directly qualifying for the Champions League and winning the cup, the collaboration ended prematurely. Paris Saint Germain

For the 2018/19 season , Tuchel took over the team from French champions Paris Saint-Germain . He signed a two-year contract in May 2018. The 2019/20 season was canceled at the end of April 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and leaders PSG were declared champions. In 2011, Tuchel was awarded the 10,000 euro coaching prize of the German Football Association (DFB). The prize recognizes the outstanding achievements of a coach in the game and in youth work. It can also be awarded for special social commitment in the context of coaching.

After Tuchel had temporarily started vocational training as a physiotherapist parallel to his football career and studied sports science and English up to the intermediate exam, but could not keep up this double burden, he completed a degree in business administration at the Stuttgart University of Cooperative Education after retiring from active football , which he completed with the Diploma completed.

In March 2009, shortly after the death of football coach Hermann Badstuber (father of footballer Holger Badstuber ), who died at the age of 53, Tuchel said that he had been his mentor .
