• Manchester City reached the final of the Champions League (including the previous competition) for the first time in the club's history and only the second European Cup final since winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1969/70 .
• Thomas Tuchel was the first coach ever to reach the finals with different teams in two consecutive years. The year before, he lost 0-1 to FC Bayern Munich with Paris Saint-Germain .
• Tuchel and Pep Guardiola met as coaches in a final match in the 2016 DFB Cup final . FC Bayern Munich, coached by Guardiola, won on penalties against Tuchel's Borussia Dortmund .
• It was the third Champions League final with two English participants.
• Goalscorer Kai Havertz scored his first goal in the Champions League in this game.
