The Gazprom Arena ( Russian "Газпром Арена" ; also Saint Petersburg Stadium , Krestovsky Stadium , Zenit Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Russian metropolis of Saint Petersburg . It can accommodate 68,134 spectators. The venue was built on the Krestowski Ostrow ( German  Krestowski Island ) on the site of the old Kirow Stadium , which was demolished in 2006 to make room for the new building.

history

At the end of 2004, the City Council of Saint Petersburg approved a new stadium. In August 2006, a jury decided on the design by the Japanese architect Kishō Kurokawa . Kirokawa's design envisaged a pure football stadium for 62,167 spectators, which will have a closable roof and an extendable playing field, similar to the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen . Construction started in April 2007, the completion planned for August 2009 was postponed several times due to difficulties with the building site and exploding construction costs totaling around 930 million euros; The inauguration took place in April 2017, in time for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2018 World Cup .

After FIFA gave its approval in April 2017, Zenit St. Petersburg was able to move into its new home ground. The first international match at the stadium was the opening match of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup between Russia and New Zealand on June 17 .

In February 2017, a motto show took place in the new building as a test with a limited number of 10,000 spectators. On April 22, 2017, the arena was inaugurated with Zenit's opening game against the Urals Sverdlovsk Oblast . The home team won 2-0. The first official goalscorer in the stadium was Serbian defender Branislav Ivanović in the 86th minute. Gradually, the number of spectators allowed should be increased. In the league game against Terek Grozny on May 7, 2017, up to 30,000 visitors should be allowed into the stadium; on May 17th against FK Krasnodar a maximum of 40,000 spectators. In the short term, Zenit had to invest in the stadium infrastructure. 33 new food stands were set up in the stadium and missing furniture was procured for the players' cabins. Some hospitality areas had to be demolished because they did not meet the requirements. Another point of criticism was the quality of the pitch, which was in poor condition. All issues should be resolved by the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

2021/22 UEFA Champions League final

On September 24, 2019, UEFA awarded the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League final to the Russian metropolis in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana . After the 2008 final in Moscow's Olympic Stadium , Saint Petersburg will be the second Russian venue for a UEFA Champions League final with the arena . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting postponements, the final of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League will take place in Saint Petersburg .

ice Hockey

In December 2018, two ice hockey games were held in the Petersburg football arena. After Zenit St. Petersburg's last home game in 2018 against Rubin Kazan on December 9th, the soccer field was pulled out and a temporary ice surface was set up for the games. First, the national ice hockey teams of Russia and Finland met on December 16 as part of the Channel One Cup  2018. On December 22nd, a meeting of the KHL between the SKA Saint Petersburg and the HK CSKA Moscow was held. The two games should make the event financially sustainable with up to 70,000 spectators each. The five previous home league games by Zenit St. Petersburg in the 2018/19 season attracted an average of 51,357 spectators

criticism

The high construction costs of 800 million euros are criticized. The roof is said to have still been leaking in 2017. Furthermore, there should have been corruption . It was also suspected that "slave labor" from North Korea were being used on the construction site.

Stadium name

In July 2009, the St. Petersburg Sports Committee called on citizens to make suggestions for the name of the new stadium. According to the Internet newspaper Petersburg.ru , the choice fell on Gazprom Arena . The well-known St. Petersburg sports journalist Gennady Orlov also speaks out in favor of the Gazprom Arena. He told the Kommersant newspaper that the name was all too logical: "The name can be a kind of guarantee that Gazprom will continue to support Zenit and invest in Russian football."

Between 2017 and December 2018 the stadium was officially called the Saint Petersburg Stadium , and was also marketed as the Zenit Stadium during the Zenit St. Petersburg league games . Since December 2018 it has been officially called Gazprom Arena .
