The Volgograd Arena ( Russian Волгоград Арена ) is a football stadium in the Russian city of Volgograd . The venue has space for 45,568 visitors. The design comes from Gerkan, Marg and Partner (GMP Architects) and PI Arena. Four group matches of the 2018 World Cup took place in the facility . After the World Cup, the Rotor Volgograd football club will use the new venue.

history

The stadium was built on the site of the demolished Central Stadium , at the foot of Mamayev Hill , in close proximity to the banks of the Volga . The former stadium was built in 1958 on the site of a former oil depot. This area was undeveloped, occupied by randomly distributed, low-quality buildings, warehouses and barracks.

On March 25, 2018, the stadium was opened for match operations by FIFA . The first game took place on April 21 of that year between Rotor Volgograd and Lutsch-Energija Vladivostok (4-2). The game saw 19,421 viewers.

The first signs of damage appeared shortly after the opening, namely cracks in concrete parts. One possible reason for this is that the arena was built on a wetland area . There have been reports of structural elements collapsing during construction. The construction company Stroitransgas stated in a statement that the safety of the visitors was not endangered.

The arena was the final venue of the 2017/18 Russian Football Cup on May 9, 2018 . Two newcomers to the cup finals met with FK Tosno and Awangard Kursk . FK Tosno won the game 2-1 and celebrated their first win of the Russian Cup in front of 40,373 spectators.

On the day of the World Cup final, heavy rains caused a landslide on an embankment at the stadium and spilled a road. It was covered by several tons of earth. Parts of the road and pipelines were destroyed. The interior of the arena was also not spared from damage that would require repair work lasting several days.
