The Ak Bars Arena ( Russian Ак Барс Арена ) is a football stadium in the northeast of the Russian city of Kazan , an autonomous republic of Tatarstan . The arena is located on the banks of the Kasanka and offers 45,093 seats for visitors to football matches. The arena replaced the central stadium from 1960 as the home ground of the Rubin Kazan football club .
history
On May 5, 2010, the then Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin laid the foundation stone for the modern stadium construction. The shape of the venue is modeled on a water lily . After a vote on the Internet on the name of the modern arena, the Kazan Arena proposal prevailed with 45 percent of the 9,477 votes. After delays and postponed opening on May 9, 2013, the stadium was completed in time for the 2013 Summer Universiade and inaugurated on June 14 of that year. Initially, construction costs were assumed to be 5.6 billion rubles (about 132 million euros ). Ultimately, the cost almost tripled to 15.5 billion rubles (around € 465 million).
The stadium is characterized by a curved roof line that slopes down from the center of the main and opposite stands to the stands behind the goals. Another striking feature is the large LED - media facade in HD quality . With a width of 150 meters and, at the highest point, 35 meters high, it is the world's largest LED facade on a football stadium. It has an area of 3,622 square meters and is equipped with three million LEDs.
In November 2019, Kazan's World Cup stadium was renamed Ak Bars Arena . The namesake is Ak Bars Bank, which belongs to Ak Bars Holding. An agreement has been reached for a long-term strategic partnership between Ak Bars Bank and the stadium operators. As part of the agreement, the renaming was also decided.
Events
The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2013 Summer Universiade were held in the former Kazan Arena. The Rubin Kazan football club will play its home games in the arena. In July 2011 Kazan was able to prevail against the Mexican Guadalajara and Hong Kong (China) to host the 2015 World Swimming Championships . The swimming competitions were held in the Kazan Arena. For this purpose, two temporary 50-meter swimming pools should be installed in the stadium and the resulting swimming stadium should offer 12,000 seats.
The city of Kazan was one of 14 candidate cities to host the 2018 World Cup in Russia. On August 30, 2012, FIFA President Sepp Blatter and Russia's Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko announced in Moscow that Kazan and the Kazan Arena will be the venue for the world football tournament, along with eleven other stadiums. A year before the World Cup, the arena was one of four venues for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup .
On March 2, 2020, UEFA awarded the game for the 2023 UEFA Super Cup to Kazan with the 2018 World Cup stadium.
