The Windsor Park (full name: National Football Stadium at Windsor Park ) is a football stadium in the Northern Irish capital Belfast , United Kingdom . In addition to the Linfield FC football club as the owner, the venue is used by the Northern Irish national football team as a national stadium . It is also the venue for the Northern Irish Cup final . For the first time in 1909, since 1996 with the exception of 2015, it has been the site of the final throughout.

history

The course was inaugurated on September 2, 1905 with a game between Linfield FC and Glentoran FC (1-0). The stadium was built in the 1930s according to the plans of the Scottish architect Archibald Leitch , who u. a. also designed Celtic Park , Ibrox Park and Hampden Park . The main stand, called South Stand , was built as a covered stand with seats. The opposite stand and the eastern stand, called Railway End , were also covered. Both, as well as the uncovered west stand, known as the Spion Kop or Kop Stand , offered standing room. At that time the stadium offered 60,000 spectators. In the 1960s, seats were also installed in Railway End . In 1970 the gap between South Stand and Railway End was closed with lounges. After a fire, the completely destroyed opposite stand had to be replaced. Since then, North Stand has offered 6800 seats on two tiers under a cantilever roof. "Kop Stand" was in a desperate condition and was also replaced in the late 1990s and now offered 5000 seats.

Renovation from 2014 to 2017

As of May 6, 2014 the facility was extensively renovated for £ 38m Part of the work was the construction of the south, east and west stands. The north tier has been rearranged. The floodlight masts were replaced by a system integrated into the roof. A new media and press area as well as rooms for guest hospitality and conferences were set up in the south tier. The new headquarters of the Northern Irish Football Association , the Irish Football Association (IFA), has been relocated to the east stand. Furthermore, the playing area received a new lawn with a drainage system for drainage. It was reopened on October 8, 2016 with the 2018 World Cup qualifier against San Marino in front of a nearly sold out house. The third new tier, the West Stand, was completed in 2017. After the renovations, the total capacity is 18,434 spectators, with seats available. Linfield FC's games attract an average of 2,000 to 2,500 spectators. Linfield FC receives 15 percent of the audience revenue for home games of the Northern Irish national football team.

On September 24, 2019, UEFA awarded the 2021 UEFA Super Cup game to Belfast with Windsor Park.
