The Vodafone Park is a football stadium in the district of Beşiktaş of the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul and is named after the club partner Vodafone Türkiye . The football club Beşiktaş Istanbul from the Süper Lig has been using the stadium as a sporting home since April 10, 2016. The club is also the owner and operator of the stadium. The venue with construction costs of 125 million euros was built on the site of the İnönü Stadı from 1947, which was demolished in 2013. The construction company was Ticaret A.Ş.

history

Construction in October 2014

On May 11, 2013, Beşiktaş received Istanbul for the last home game in the club's own İnönü Stadı Gençlerbirliği from the capital, Ankara . The home side won the Süper Lig game 3-0. After the game, the visitors secured souvenirs, such as a piece of lawn or stadium seats, from the BJK's long-standing home. The last goal in the stadium was scored by Slovak striker Filip Hološko in the 73rd minute.

With the symbolic start of the demolition work on June 2, 2013 by Beşiktaş President Fikret Orman , the end of İnönü Stadı was heralded. For reasons of monument protection, the southern facade and the entrance in the west were excluded from demolition. Due to the spatial restriction of the old building structure and the surrounding streets, the space available from İnönü Stadı (32,086) to Vodafone Park (41,903) increased only marginally and remains behind the venues of the two Istanbul city rivals Fenerbahçe (50,530) and Galatasaray (52,650).

The new venue was supposed to open on October 29, 2014 on Republic Day , but this date could not be kept. The architect Bünyamin Derman stated in an interview in September 2014 that the roof structure should not be tensioned until January 2015. But there were still delays in the schedule.

In the process of choosing the best stadiums in the world, the new stadium was voted the second best stadium in 2016 by the website StadiumDB.com. The stadium even took first place in the public election.

Opening and first games

Fans at the opening game

On April 10, 2016, the new home of Beşiktaş was finally completed. As one of the last jobs, the missing parts of the roof membrane were stretched on the inner roof ring. Shortly before the opening, the Turkish association TFF granted approval on April 8, 2016. The day before the first game on April 10, the new building was inaugurated with a ceremony in the presence of President Erdoğan and 6,000 spectators.

The first game in the € 125 million stadium was played on April 11, 2016 by Beşiktaş and Bursaspor , the biggest rival outside of Istanbul. Before the game, Beşiktaş fans and police clashed outside the stadium . The emergency services, however, used water cannons and tear gas , which could be felt into the interior of the stadium. Beşiktaş won the league game 3-2, with German striker Mario Gómez scoring the first goal as a double goal scorer in the 22nd minute in front of 38,420 spectators in the new stadium.

On September 20, 2017, the game for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup was awarded in the Beşiktaş stadium.

Bomb attacks on December 10, 2016

On December 10, 2016, the area around the stadium was the target of two bomb attacks. Around 10:29 p.m. local time, after the end of the first division game between Beşiktaş and Bursaspor , a car bomb exploded. 45 seconds later, a man blew himself up in nearby Macka Park when he was stopped by a group of police officers. At least 38 people, including 30 police officers, died in the attacks. More than 150 people were injured. The Kurdish terrorist organization Teyrêbazên Azadîya Kurdistan ( Freedom Falcons of Kurdistan ) claimed responsibility for the attack .

Sponsor name

In mid-August 2013, the telecommunications company Vodafone Türkiye became the stadium's name sponsor and also became Beşiktaş's new shirt sponsor. The naming contract for the park has a term of ten years Template: future / in 2 years(plus an option for a further five years) and has a value of 116 million US dollars . The financial volume of the shirt sponsorship agreement is US $ 29 million and runs for three years with an option for two more years. Initially the facility was called Vodafone Arena , but was renamed Vodafone Park in 2017 due to political pressure .

Location and transport links

The stadium location is right on the European bank of the Bosphorus, close to historical buildings of Ottoman architecture such as the Dolmabahçe Palace , the Dolmabahçe clock tower and the Dolmabahçe Mosque .

Characteristics

capacity

According to the plan among the 41,903 seats, among other 1,847 seats in the 147 VIP - boxes and 2150 VIP and business seats. 81 places are provided for wheelchair users plus 81 places for companions. The press stand should offer 186 seats for the journalists. The VIP restaurant and lounge area extend over 1,600 square meters . 350 parking spaces will be created in the stadium. The number of stadium seats of 41,903 refers to 1903, the year Beşiktaş Istanbul was founded.

Facade and roof

On November 3, 2015, the tensioning of the inner steel roof ring began . It took almost half a year to assemble the 850- ton part of the roof. The ring was moving towards its location at a rate of three meters per day. The entire roof structure has a weight of around 2,500 tons and spans over 84 columns. After two weeks, the roof ring was in place at a height of 41.5 meters above the pitch. Only minor corrections had to be made so that the heavy component could be pulled up on all sides at a constant speed without overloading the steel cables at one corner.

The double-deck ranks of the football arena be of a PTFE - membrane spanning, which is held on a steel frame with steel cables. Architect Bünyamin Derman from DBArchitects was responsible for the stadium design .

The last work included the seating of the tiers and the completion of the roof, including the tensioning of the translucent membrane made of silicone-coated textile, Atex 5000 TRL by the British-Latvian company Valmiera Glass. The Atex 5000 TRL membrane has been newly developed for stadium roofs and was used here for the first time. Advantages include high light transmission and strength. On January 13, 2016, assembly of the seats in the grandstands began. Tensioning of the first part of the roof membrane began on February 9, 2016. The last part of the membrane was stretched on March 18, 2016. The seating was completed.

Stadium interior on the opening day

The British company SIS Pitches laid the hybrid turf playing surface . The surface for the playing field turf was prepared with a drainage system and turf heating . The laying of the turf began on March 19, 2016 and the installation of the turf system was completed at the beginning of April 2016. This was followed three days later by the start of the mechanical insertion of the artificial turf fibers .

Cellular

As a result of the collaboration between Vodafone and the US telecommunications company Cisco Systems , the arena will offer free Wi-Fi internet access and broadband cellular communications via hot spots throughout the stadium . The screens for live games, interviews and advertising distributed in the Vodafone Arena will be full HD .

Security systems

The security system was planned by the Turkish company Enmar Engineering and installed by the British provider HEG Building Technologies . The core of the security system are three Expert Servers (G-Scope / 8000-IP series) for video management from the German manufacturer Geutebrück. 8 G-V stations are currently evaluating the image material from 243 third-party cameras. Six of them can be used for a monitor wall. G-VStations are high-performance evaluation, analysis and playback computers for G-Scope systems in the network. The system also forms the basis for the video surveillance system for storing safety-relevant data.
