The Rostov Arena is a football stadium in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don , capital of Rostov Oblast . The stadium is on the south bank of the Don River , while the city of Rostov is north of the river. The Rostov Arena can accommodate 45,145 spectators. The venue was the venue for four group matches and one game of the round of 16 of the 2018 World Cup . The facility is the new home of the Rostov football club and replaces the Olimp-2 , which opened in 1930 .

history

The first design for the stadium was discarded because of costs of over RUB 20 billion . The preparatory work began in 2012, but initially made slow progress. The pile foundation and the pouring of the foundations only started in 2014 . A total of 11,044 piles had been placed in the ground by mid-2015, and half of the planned concrete (92,000 m 3 ) went into the arena substructure . This was followed by the construction of the grandstands and the roof structure. Construction picked up speed, and by April 2016 the concrete work had been 90 percent done. The Rostov Arena should be completed by the end of December 2017. At the end of October 2016, the steel structure for the roof was completed so that the supports could be removed. On November 15, 2016, the first part of the roof membrane was stretched. After the 2018 World Cup, the stadium is to be reduced to 37,885 seats for further use.

The World Cup stadium in Rostov was inaugurated on April 15, 2018. The opening game was the league game between FK Rostov and FK SKA-Khabarovsk , which the home team won 2-0. The first goal in the new stadium was scored by the Icelandic center forward Björn Bergmann Sigurðarson .

The region estimates that the stadium will generate up to 330 million rubles (around 4.48 million euros ) in maintenance and operating costs every year . This does not include the retrofitting for subsequent use by FK Rostow . The Russian state budget will cover up to 95 % of the costs by 2023  . After that, the arena will be transferred to Rostov Oblast with the costs.

In the season 2019/20 contributes Chaika Peschanokopskoye from the 170 km distant Peschanokopskoye from its second division games in the Rostov-Arena.
