The FIFA Confederations Cup 2001 ( English FIFA Confederations Cup 2001 ) was the third edition of this intercontinental football competition for national teams under this name and under the care of FIFA and the fifth overall and took place from 30 May to 10 June in South Korea and Japan instead. For the two Asian countries, the competition was a dress rehearsal for the 2002 World Cup, which took place there a year later .
As before, the game was played in two groups of four teams, everyone against everyone. The two group winners each reached the semifinals. In the event of a tie between two teams, the decision on progress was made in the following order: the goal difference and goals scored from all group matches, the direct encounters between the teams concerned (number of points, goal difference, goals scored), and ultimately the fair play list or the lot. From the semi-finals onwards, the game was played in the knockout system . If the games in the final round were tied after the normal playing time of 90 minutes, there was extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out .
European champions France won the tournament in the final against hosts Japan with a goal from Patrick Vieira . This made France - after Brazil in 1997 - the second team to be world champions, continental champions (European champions) and winners of the Confederations Cup at the same time.
Robert Pires brought the French team 1-0 in the 7th minute of the game, but Ramon Menezes equalized after half an hour. In the 54th minute it was Marcel Desailly who scored the winning goal for the French.
Golden Ball
The "Golden Ball" for the best player of the tournament went to Frenchman Robert Pires , the "Silver Ball" to his compatriot Patrick Vieira and the "Bronze Ball" to the Japanese Hidetoshi Nakata .
Golden Shoe
The "Golden Shoe" for the best goalscorer went to the French Robert Pires and Éric Carrière for two tournament goals each. Since both players were able to record two assists each, the Golden Trophy was awarded twice. The "bronze shoe" went to the South Korean Hwang Sun-hong . Since five players had scored two goals each, first the number of assists and then the fewer minutes played decided the ranking.
FIFA Fair Play Trophy
The Japanese national soccer team received the fair play award for correct sporting behavior on and off the pitch .
