Washington Stecanela Cerqueira (born April 1, 1975 in Brasília ), better known as Washington , is a former Brazilian soccer player .

Life

Washington first played at Internacional , Gremio Porto Alegre , AA Ponte Preta and SER Caxias do Sul , before his breakthrough at Paraná Clube and he was brought back from Ponte Preta. There he scored 34 goals in 47 games within two seasons. Thereupon people also noticed him in Europe and in 2002 he moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul in Turkey.

In the Süper Lig he scored nine goals in twelve games. However, a coronary angiography revealed a heart disease, so the treating physicians advised him to retire.

After a long break, he signed a contract with Athletico Paranaense , for which he played from 2004. He scored 34 goals in 38 games for the club in his comeback season. In 2005 he moved to Tokyo Verdy in 1969 in the Japanese J. League . Here he scored 22 goals this season in 33 games. In May 2006 Guido Buchwald brought him to Urawa Red Diamonds . There he was national champion and cup winner. In his first season he scored 26 goals in 26 games.

Washington played in the Brazilian national team from 2001 . Until his heart disease was discovered, he played ten times and scored three goals. He took part in the Confederations Cup in 2001 . Most recently he played again with Fluminense Rio de Janeiro , where he ended his career at the end of 2010 after being loaned to São Paulo FC in 2009/10 .

In September 2011 he won a mandate for the Democratic Workers' Party (PDT) in the city council of the city of Caxias do Sul , where he lives with his family.
