← J1 League 2015 | |
The J1 League 2016 was the 24th season of the highest division of the Japanese J. League and the second under the name J1 League . Eighteen clubs took part in it. The season started on February 28, 2016 and ended on November 3, 2016; then a short championship tournament was held to determine the master .
In the final of the championship tournament, Kashima Antlers prevailed just over Urawa Red Diamonds thanks to the away goals rule . Both teams took part in the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2017 . The other participants in this competition were Kawasaki Frontale, who lost the championship semi-final against Kashima, and Gamba Osaka , who, fourth in the overall table, benefited from the fact that with Kashima and Kawasaki, two teams already qualified for the Champions League, met in the final of the Imperial Cup 2016 . Relegated to the J2 League 2017 were Nagoya Grampus , Shonan Bellmare and Avispa Fukuoka .
mode
To determine the champion, after the double round tournament with 18 teams, a short championship tournament was held at the end of the season, for which several of these 18 clubs were able to qualify as follows:
In each half of the double round tournament, the clubs played against each other once. Games that were played at home in the first half series were played away in the second series and vice versa. This resulted in three tables: a table for the first half series, a table for the second half series and at the end an overall table consisting of all game results from the two half series. The tables were drawn up according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The first place in the overall table qualified immediately for the final of the championship tournament. The final opponent was determined from among the remaining qualifiers. These included the runner-up and third place in the overall table as well as the first place in the first half series (first half of the season) and the first place in the second half (second half of the season). If a club fulfilled several criteria for qualification (for example if the third in the overall table was also the best in the first half of the season), there were no successors. This resulted in a number of participants of at least three and at most five teams for the championship tournament, according to which the tournament mode was then also based:
- With a total of five teams, a semi-series winner played against a qualifier from the overall table. The half-series winner, who was better placed in the overall table, played against the third-placed club in the overall table, while the worse-placed club played against the runner-up in the overall table. The winners from both games then played in the semi-final game for a free place in the final.
- In a total of four teams, the runner-up was set for the semi-final game. The remaining semi-series champion and the third in the overall table played a game to get into this semi-final. The winner of the semi-final game reached the final.
- With a total of three teams, the first round was omitted, the second and third placed played a game to get into the final.
The final of the championship round was played back and forth.
The three worst teams in the overall table were relegated to J. League Division 2 .
Attendees
Ōmiya Ardija returned as the 2015 J2 League champion after a one-year absence . The second promoted Júbilo Iwata returned after a two-year absence. The third promoted Avispa Fukuoka was last in 2011 in the top division. The rise was achieved through a win and a draw in the playoffs over V-Varen Nagasaki (1-0) and Cerezo Osaka (1-1) after third place jumped out in the regular season.
The three promoted teams replaced the last three teams of the 2015 season , Matsumoto Yamaga , Shimizu S-Pulse and Montedio Yamagata . Matsumoto Yamaga and Montedio Yamagata had to return to J2 after just one year in the J1 League.

Championship tournament
For the championship tournament, Urawa Red Diamonds qualified as the best placed team of the entire season and winner of the second half series , Kawasaki Frontale came second for the entire season and Kashima Antlers came third in the overall table and winner of the first half series . Since the two semi-series winners were able to place themselves among the top three teams in the overall table, the first round scheduled for November 6, 2016 was completely omitted.
- Semifinals
Kawasaki and Kashima faced each other in the semi-final game on November 23, 2016. In the first half, an even game developed with only a few chances to score, so that the teams went into the break without goals. Shortly after the start of the second half, Shūto Yamamoto prevailed on the left and struck a cross into the box, which was used by Mū Kanazaki with a head to lead Kashima. As a result, Kawasaki increased the pressure and came up with several chances, but without accommodating them in goal. As in the previous year, the third placed in the overall table moved into the final.
