history

The Sendai Stadium in Sendai, a major city in Miyagi Prefecture, was completed in 1997 and opened on June 1 of that year. Since opening, the stadium has been used by the Vegalta Sendai club as a venue for home games. The club's greatest success so far was a championship in the second highest Japanese league, the J. League Division 2 in 2009. Due to the associated promotion to the J. League Division 1 , Vegalta Sendai currently plays in the first division, with the club mostly plays at Sendai Stadium. For games where a higher number of spectators is expected, the club moves to the larger Miyagi Stadium in Rifu for a short time .

The Sendai Stadium can seat 19,694 spectators. When Japan, along with South Korea , the 2002 FIFA World Cup hosted, it was not considered as the venue. However, it was used by the Italian national football team as a training stadium during the world tournament in East Asia . The Sendai Cup has been held annually in the Sendai Stadium since 2003. Teams from Japan, Italy , France , Croatia and Brazil meet each other at this tournament . Chievo Verona secured the first Sendai Cup with a win in the final against Lazio Rome , with Oliver Bierhoff scoring the decisive goal. It is also used for rugby games. In 2007 and 2008 it was selected as one of the venues for the Pacific Nations Cup . A team from New Zealand won both times . The Japanese national rugby team beat Tonga 35-13 at the Sendai Stadium during the 2008 Pacific Nations Cup.

The stadium is owned by the city of Sendai. In 2006 the naming rights were sold for three years to the electricity and infrastructure company KK Yurtec, since then the stadium is officially called Yurtec Stadium Sendai ( ユ ア テ ッ ク ス タ ジ ア ム 仙台 , Yurutekku Sutajiamu Sendai ). The contract was extended for a further three years in 2009 and again in 2012.

On March 11, 2011, the stadium and the club grounds were badly damaged by the Tōhoku earthquake and the tsunami that it triggered .
