The Toyota Stadium ( Japanese 豊 田 ス タ ジ ア ム , Toyota Sutajiamu ) is a football stadium in the Japanese city of Toyota in Aichi Prefecture . It is named after the car maker of the same name who has its headquarters in the city. The stadium has a capacity of 45,000 spectators and has a closable roof, which has not been used since 2015 for cost reasons and remains open permanently. The soccer club Nagoya Grampus from the J-League plays its home games in the Toyota Stadium, which is about 30 kilometers from Nagoya's city center .
The venue was planned by the Japanese architect Kishō Kurokawa and opened in 2001 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the city of Toyota. Initially, it was intended as a venue for the 2002 World Cup , but it was no longer taken into account in the final selection of the stadiums. In 2005, the stadium was used for the first time as the venue for the FIFA Club World Cup , which has since taken place in Japan five times.
The Toyota Stadium is also the home ground of the rugby club Toyota Verblitz from the Top League , the highest league in Japan. Toyota Stadium is a venue for the 2019 Rugby Union World Cup .
