JF Ade Ajayi

Jacob Festus Ade Ajayi (born May 26, 1929 in Ikole-Ekiti , today Ekiti State, Nigeria , † August 9, 2014 in Ibadan , Oyo , Nigeria) was a Nigerian historian and university professor .

Life

Ajayi was the son of the assistant to a Yoruba dignitary , an Oba , his hometown at the time of the colonial administration of the country. There he attended elementary school and later, supported by a scholarship from the local administration of Ikole-Ekiti, went to Lagos , where he attended Igbobi College until he finished school. He then studied history at the University of Ibadan . He deepened his studies in this subject in England at the University of Leicester . He graduated from the Historical Research Institute of London University as a Bachelor of Arts and received his doctorate there from 1957 to 1958.

Ajayi returned to the University of Ibadan's Historical Institute in 1964, where he taught until 1989. In 1972 he was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Lagos , but had to leave this post after student unrest in 1978 at the instigation of the then ruling military regime under Olusegun Obasanjo . From 1984 to 1988 he was Vice Chancellor of Ondo State University in Ado-Ekiti .
