The Shiritsu Suita Soccer Stadium (" Suita City Football Stadium "; Japanese 市立 吹 田 サ ッ カ ー ス タ ジ ア ム , Shiritsu Suita Sakkā Sutajiamu ; English Suita City Football Stadium ) is a football stadium in the city of Suita in the north of the western Japanese prefecture of Osaka . It is the new venue of the soccer club Gamba Osaka from the J1 League and offers 39,694 seats, of which 1,248 are VIP seats and 414 are wheelchair accessible. It is also known as the Gamba Osaka Stadium . The old home of Gamba, the Osaka Expo '70 Stadium , is only 700 meters north of the Suita City Football Stadium.

history

The idea for a new venue for Gamba Osaka dates back to 2007. The current venue, Osaka Expo '70 Stadium, was opened in 1972 and, from today's perspective, does not meet the modern requirements of the J. League or international football. Among other things, there is no roofing of the tiers and an athletics facility separates the spectators far from the playing field. The first stadium design with a budget of 15 billion yen was presented in 2008. At that time, the stadium was designed for 32,000 spectators. As part of Japan's bid for the 2022 World Cup , the number was increased to 40,000 in 2013.

Construction could not start until December 13, 2013. After completion, the football arena, made possible mainly by donations, was handed over to the city. It is operated by the Gamba Osaka football club. The spectator seats on the two-story grandstands are completely covered by an octagonal roof structure in a steel frame. The tiers in the compactly built stadium interior are only between seven and ten meters from the edge of the field. When implementing the new home from Gamba, attention was also paid to ecology and energy efficiency . In parts of the roof was a photovoltaic system with a 500 kW - solar power plant installed. Any rainwater is collected and half of it (5,500 tons) is used for the stadium toilets. The floodlight system is equipped with energy-saving LED technology. It is the first of its kind in a Japanese stadium and reduces consumption by 27  % . The special shape of the roof saved 40% of the amount of steel. Despite the reduced use of steel, the stadium is earthquake-proof. A large, public shelter and a store with food and water (480 ) were set up in the stadium building in the event of a natural disaster . The shelter offers space for up to 800 people for a short time.

The first soccer game took place on February 14, 2016 in the new home. The hosts of Gamba Osaka and Nagoya Grampus Eight (3-1) met in a preseason game in front of more than 35,000 spectators . The first official game will be played in the J1 League on February 28, 2016 against the Kashima Antlers . Suita City Football Stadium is the first stadium in Japan to be funded by donations. The donors were immortalized by individual plaques in the stadium.

In December 2016, the Suita City Football Stadium next to the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama hosted the FIFA Club World Cup .

financing

Most of the construction costs for the soccer arena were raised by a fundraising organization through donations. A budget of 14 billion yen was given. Donations from 721 companies raised nearly ten billion yen and the city added around 3.255 billion yen. The number of 34,627 private donors contributed ¥ 622 million. In June 2015 Gamba Osaka reported that they had reached the specified amount. The total was ¥ 14,085,665,383. Many of the private donors were invited to a tour of the venue on October 10, 2015.

The fundraising officially ended on March 14, 2015. By then, around 13.8 billion yen had been raised. In mid-2015, Gamba Osaka reported that the construction costs were fully covered.
