The FIFA Club World Cup 2016 ( English FIFA Club World Cup 2016 ) was the 13th staging of this worldwide football competition for club teams and took place in 2016 for the eighth time in Japan .
Award
Originally, in addition to Japan, India also applied to host the 2015 and 2016 tournaments. On April 23, 2015, FIFA Japan awarded the contract.
mode
There were no changes compared to the competition mode that has been in effect since 2007. The tournament was held with seven participants. In addition to the six winners of the continental championship competitions at club level from Asia (AFC), Africa (CAF), the Caribbean, North and Central America (CONCACAF), South America (CONMEBOL), Europe (UEFA) and Oceania (OFC), the Japanese champions also competed who first had to play an elimination match against the winner of the OFC Champions League. If a club from Japan had won the AFC Champions League, the best ranked non-Japanese club would qualify. The winner of the qualifying match played two participants in the semi-finals with the representatives of Africa, Asia and CONCACAF. The participants from Europe and South America were already set for this and thus only played two games each. The game was played in a knockout system . Eight games took place over eleven days.

FIFA Fair Play Trophy
The Kashima Antlers were able to secure the fair play price for sportily correct appearance on and off the lawn .
referee
FIFA nominated a team of referees from each continental association . For the first time, each referee team had special video referees. These were experienced FIFA referees who were supposed to support the main referee during the match with video recordings .
In the semifinals between the Kashima Antlers and Atlético Nacional , referee Kassai provided a novelty. When, when the game was interrupted in the 29th minute, on a hint from the video referee, he looked at a controversial penalty area scene that had occurred shortly before on a monitor, and then corrected his original decision and awarded a penalty to the Kashima Antlers decided. This was the first known, official use case of video evidence in an official FIFA tournament.
