2001 FIFA Club World Cup

The FIFA Club World Cup 2001 ( Engl. : FIFA Club World Championship in 2001 ) was as a second playout of this global soccer competition intended for club teams in the period from 28 July to 12 August 2001 in Spain. However, the event was canceled by FIFA on May 18, 2001. Reasons for cancellation were, in addition to scheduling problems for the clubs involved, the financing of the tournament, which was no longer guaranteed after the bankruptcy of the sports marketing company ISL / ISMM , the then marketing partner of FIFA.

Intended mode

A tournament with twelve teams from all continental zones was planned, which should determine the semi-finalists in three groups of four, for which the three group winners and the best group runner-up would have qualified. The winners of the semi-finals would have played the final, the losers the game for third place.

Planned venues

The stadiums Santiago Bernabéu and Vicente Calderón in Madrid , the Riazor Stadium in La Coruña and the San Lázaro Stadium in Santiago de Compostela were planned as venues .
