The 1999 Copa Libertadores , also known as the Copa Toyota Libertadores due to the sponsorship of the car manufacturer Toyota , was the 40th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 21 teams took part, including the national champions of the nine best CONMEBOL countries and the runner-up as well as two representatives from Mexico and Venezuela, who determined two remaining places in the qualification. Defending champion CR Vasco da Gama completed the field of participants . The tournament began on February 21st and ended on June 16, 1999 with the final second leg. The Brazilian representative Palmeiras São Paulo won the final against Deportivo Cali and thus the Copa Libertadores for the first time .
