The 1972 Copa Libertadores was the 13th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 21 teams took part. The national champions of the CONMEBOL countries and the second took part, or the winner and finalist of the cup competition in Bolivia, as no national championship has yet been held there. Uruguay only sent one participant as Nacional Montevideo had won the tournament the year before and was automatically qualified. The tournament began on January 30th and ended on May 24th 1972 with the final second leg. The Argentine representative CA Independiente defeated Universitario de Deportes in the finals and won this competition for the third time.
