The Estadio Libertadores de América ( German Stadium of the Liberators of America ), known as "La Doble Visera", the "double visor", is a football stadium in Avellaneda , an industrial suburb of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It has space for 50,655 spectators and is the home ground of the CA Independiente football club .
history
The Estadio Libertadores de América was built between 1926 and 1928 and opened on March 4, 1928. For the first game in the new stadium, the future user, CA Independiente from Avellaneda, and the Uruguayan top club CA Peñarol from Montevideo met for a friendly game that ended 2-2. Independiente has been playing its home games in this stadium since that day. The club has been Argentine champion 15 times to date . In addition, Independiente is the record holder of the Copa Libertadores with seven titles .
In November 2006, the old Estadio Libertadores de América was demolished to begin construction on a more modern arena. The construction phase of the new arena lasted from 2007 to 2009. The first game in the new stadium, which is very similar to a modern European stadium, took place in 2009 between Independiente and CA Colón (3-2) from Santa Fe as part of the Argentine championship. The new Estadio Libertadores de América has a capacity of 50,655 seats, while the old stadium had a capacity of 57,000, making it the third largest stadium in Argentina.
