history
The Estadio Monumental José Fierro in San Miguel de Tucumán , a city with over half a million inhabitants in the province of Tucumán and at the same time the capital of the smallest province of Argentina , was built in 1922 and opened on May 21 of the same year. Initially, the sports facility had a capacity of 5,000 spectators. Over the years the capacity has increased to 29,200 seats. This makes the Estadio Monumental José Fierro the largest stadium in San Miguel de Tucumán, ahead of the Estadio La Ciudadela from CA San Martín , which can seat 26,500 spectators.
The Estadio Monumental José Fierro is used by the local club Atlético Tucumán as a venue for home football matches. In its history, the club, which was founded in 1902, has not yet had any great successes that went beyond the province of Tucumán. Between 1973 and 1981 and 1984, 2009/10 and again since the 2016/17 season Atlético Tucumán played or plays in the first division of Argentina.
