↑ Copa Libertadores 2017 |
The Copa Sudamericana 2017 is the 16th edition of the second most important South American football competition for club teams after the Copa Libertadores , which has been known as the "Copa Total Sudamericana" since 2013 due to the sponsorship of the French mineral oil company Total . Due to a major change in mode, a total of 54 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL will take part for the first time , including 10 teams eliminated from the current 2017 Copa Libertadores competition . For the first time, like the Libertadores 2017, the competition will be held over the entire calendar year and not in the second half of the year as before. Six participants from Argentina and Brazil each qualify for the competition, and four from each of the other 8 countries.

mode
As before, the competition will be held in a pure knockout system and there will be two rounds before the round of 16, but with more participants. In the first round, the 44 directly qualified participants from all 10 member countries of CONMEBOL start for the first time. In the 2nd round, the 10 teams from the Copa Libertadores are added to the 22 winners of the 1st round. These are made up of the two best losers in the third qualifying round and the eight thirds in the group stage. The defending champion no longer takes part in the competition because he has automatic right to start in the Copa Libertadores, which is being held at the same time. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applies . If the number of goals scored away from home is also the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg .
On October 11, 2017, COMMEBOL announced that video evidence would be used as an aid for Finale . With the help of video evidence, the decisions: goal or not goal, red card or not, as well as the identification of players should be made easier.
