mode
The competition was played in a pure knockout system with a return leg, and there were two rounds before the round of 16. The final was decided in just one game for the first time by decision of CONMEBOL. The 44 directly qualified participants from all 10 member countries of CONMEBOL started in the first round. In the 2nd round, the 10 teams from the Copa Libertadores were added to the 22 winners of the 1st round. These consisted of the two best losers in the third qualifying round and the eight thirds in the group stage. The defending champion did not take part in the competition because he had automatic start rights in the Copa Libertadores, which was being held at the same time. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applied . If the number of goals scored away from home was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg .
1 round
Participants were six teams each from Argentina and Brazil as well as four teams each from the other eight countries in South America. The draw took place on December 17, 2018, the games took place between February 5 and May 3, 2019.
