Copa Sudamericana 2006
The Copa Sudamericana 2006 was the 5th edition of this second most important South American football competition for club teams, which also operated under the name "Copa Nissan Sudamericana" due to the sponsorship of the automobile manufacturer Nissan . In this fifth season a total of 34 teams including defending champion Boca Juniors took part, including 31 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL and for the first time 3 teams from the CONCACAF division . These were CF Pachuca and Deportivo Toluca from Mexico and LD Alajuelense from Costa Rica. As before, the competition was held in the second half of the year. He started on August 22, 2006 with the elimination rounds and ended on December 13, 2006 with the final second leg in Santiago de Chile . The title won the Mexican club CF Pachuca.
mode
Compared to the previous year, there were no changes to the mode of competition. As usual, the respective winners of the regional elimination rounds qualified for the round of 16. Another six teams qualified directly for the round of 16. These were three teams from Argentina and the three teams from the CONCACAF division. From the last sixteen onwards, the game was played in a pure knockout system with a return leg. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applied . If the number of goals scored away from home was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg . This rule also applied to the final.

The first legs took place on August 22 and 30, and the second legs on September 12 and 20, 2006.
