Copa Sudamericana 2008
The Copa Sudamericana 2008 was the 7th staging of the second most important South American football competition for club teams, which was also known as the "Copa Nissan Sudamericana" due to the sponsorship of the automobile manufacturer Nissan . In this seventh season a total of 34 teams took part again. Including 31 teams, including defending champion Arsenal de Sarandí , from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL and 3 teams from the CONCACAF division . These were Deportivo Guadalajara and San Luis FC from Mexico and CD Motagua from Honduras. As before, the competition was held in the second half of the year. It began on July 29, 2008 with the first leg of the first round and ended on December 3, 2008 with the final second leg in Porto Alegre .
mode
Compared to the previous year, there were changes to the mode of competition. The regional elimination rounds were no longer held. The competition was played from the first round to the final in a pure knockout system with a return game. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applied . If the number of goals scored away from home was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg . In the final, the away goals rule did not apply for the first time. If the goal difference was the same after the first and second leg, there was extra time and only then, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out.
