The Estádio Beira-Rio (official name: Estádio José Pinheiro Borda, nickname: Gigante da Beira-Rio ) is a football stadium in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre . It was built in 1959 and serves as the home stadium of the Internacional Porto Alegre club .

history

Estádio Beira-Rio before the renovation

In 1956, the management members of Internacional Porto Alegre came up with the idea of building a new venue for the club. At the time, the club, which has long been one of the best in Brazil, played its games in the Estádio dos Eucaliptos , which was built in 1931 and only had a 20,000-seat audience. Three years later the construction of a new stadium for Internacional began. Nevertheless, the club continued to play in the old stadium until 1969, before the decision was made to tear it down and play its home games at the Estádio Beira-Rio.

Just three years after the stadium opened on April 6, 1969 with a friendly match between Internacional Porto Alegre and the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon , the record crowd in the Estádio Beira-Rio, which is still valid today, was counted as 107,000 spectators for a game of the Rio Grande national team do Sul against the Brazilian national soccer team streamed into the stadium.

Conversion for the 2014 World Cup

The Estádio Beira-Rio was rebuilt for the soccer World Cup in 2014 and since then has a capacity of 50,287 seats.
