history

The stadium: Parque Saroldi
Libertadores group game premiere 2016: 2-2 in Maldonado against SE Palmeiras

The club was created on May 11, 1932 from a merger of Olimpia FC and CA Capurro . The new club took the name River Plate from a successful club from the early days of Uruguayan football, the four-time champions River Plate Football Club , which was dissolved in 1929. The jerseys are also based on this club. After the merger, the team hosted the home games in the former "Olimpia Park" of the former Olimpia FC . This was then renamed on July 4, 1932 after the previously deceased goalkeeper "Chiquito" Saroldi.

River Plate has never won a nationally or internationally significant title in its long club history, although since the introduction of professional football in Uruguay they have so far spent 62 seasons (as of 2010) in the top Uruguayan league. Only the six-time championship in the second division and the associated promotion to the Primera División make the club the most successful Uruguayan club after the CA Fénix (seven second division championship titles). The first promotion to the Primera División dates from 1943, when they won the decisive game in front of 9,004 spectators against Cerro 1-0 with a goal by Manolo Pérez .

The then second division team consisted of the following players: Saaini , Morales , Zubía , Etchenique , Miguel Olivera , Sosa , M.Pérez , Flora , Goncalvez , Fleitas and M. Olivera

In 1992 the club achieved its best position in the first division after its rise. In 1996 the club took part in an international competition for the first time, when they competed at the Copa Conmebol . Fernando Morena was the coach at the time . In 1998 they were also represented in this competition. In the late 1990s, River went down again. Since the last promotion under coach Martín Lasarte in 2004, River Plate has once again played first class. In the first half of the championship, the Torneo Apertura 2007/08, the club reached a surprising fourth place in the table and provided the top scorer with Richard Porta . In the second half of the same season River Plate even made it into second place, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the championship final. Nevertheless, this was the most successful season in the club's history and they qualified for the Copa Sudamericana .

The club then took part in the Copa Sudamericana three times in a row in 2008 , 2009 and 2010 . In 2009, River Plate advanced to the semi-finals, where they finally failed to LDU Quito .

In the 2012/13 season they were ranked 4th in the final table at the end of the season and thus qualified for the 2013 Copa Sudamericana . After completing the Apertura 2013, they ranked second in the table. In the Clausura 2014 they came fourth. With this, River Plate finished 3rd in the overall table for the 2013/14 season . In the following season 2014/15 , in which they finished 2nd in the Clausura, they came third overall.

In 2016, the club took part in the Copa Libertadores de América for the first time, but was eliminated as the bottom of the group without a win.

  • Runner-up: 1992, 2008
  • Segunda División : (6 ×) 1943, 1967, 1978, 1984, 1991, 2004

With six championships won in the Uruguayan second division, the club was the record holder together with Institución Atlética Sud América and CA Fénix until 2009 . In 2009 Fénix was able to celebrate winning the seventh championship title and outstripping the two clubs.
