Copa Sudamericana 2016

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa Sudamericana 2016 was the 15th staging of the second most important South American football competition for club teams after the Copa Libertadores , which has been known as the "Copa Total Sudamericana" since 2013 due to the sponsorship of the French mineral oil company Total . As in the previous year, 47 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL , including defending champion Independiente Santa Fe from Colombia, took part. In addition to this, Argentina had six and Brazil eight participants; the other eight countries each have four participants in the competition. As before, this was played in the second half of the year.

The competition was overshadowed by the crash of LaMia flight 2933 , in which 19 players and 26 officials of the finalist Chapecoense died on their way to Medellín , the first leg of the final pairing.

mode

As in the previous year, there were two rounds before the round of 16. In the first round, the eight countries (with the exception of Argentina and Brazil) started with their four teams each. The participants from Argentina and Brazil only joined in the second round, with the teams from both countries playing against each other. Defending champion Independiente Santa Fe had a bye to the round of 16. As usual, the competition was held from the first round to the final in a pure knockout system with a return game. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applied . If the number of goals scored away from home was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg .

1 round

Participants were four teams each from eight countries in South America, with the exception of the teams from Argentina and Brazil. The first legs took place between August 9 and 11 and the second legs between August 16 and 18.

Canceled final

On November 29, 2016, the final was canceled by the South American football association CONMEBOL because the Chapecoense team had crashed in the plane a few hours earlier and 19 players and 26 officials had died. Only three players survived, along with three other passengers, seriously injured in the crash.

Despite the cancellation of the final, the stadium in Medellín was full of seats. Atlético Nacional supporters sang the club anthem Semper Chapecó ( Forever Chapecó ) by Chapecoense. "It was 90 minutes of football atmosphere without a ball rolling, perhaps one of the greatest moments in recent sports history."

The final opponent Atlético Nacional announced that they would forego the title and demanded that it be given to Chapecoense instead as a "posthumous tribute" . The South American football association CONMEBOL declared Chapecoense the title holder on December 2, 2016.
