history

Until 2016

The association Associação Chapecoense de Futebol was founded on May 10, 1973 in the city of Chapecó , in the west of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . The founding of the club was preceded by a merger of the two local clubs Independiente and Atlético Chapecoense . Four years after the club was founded, Chapecoense won its first title: In the final of the national championship in Santa Catarina, Avaí FC from Florianópolis were defeated 1-0 and secured the first of four titles in this competition to date. The other victories in the state championship followed in 1996, 2007 and 2011.

In 1978 Chapecoense first appeared at the highest level of Brazilian club football. They ended the season in 51st place, a year later they were relegated to 93rd place. After 1979, the club failed to return to Série A for three decades . This did not happen again until 2013 . They finished the Série B in second place behind Palmeiras São Paulo and rose to the Série A for the first time in 34 years. In the course of the ascent, the capacity of the Arena Condá , the Chapecoense stadium, was increased from 15,000 seats to around 22,000.

Plane crash on November 28, 2016

On November 23, 2016, the club reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana 2016 . It would have been the first final in an international competition for a club from the state of Santa Catarina. On the way to Colombia for the final first leg against Atlético Nacional , the plane with the team on board crashed on November 28 near Rionegro Airport . Here died Ananias , Matheus Biteco , Canela , Caramelo , Danilo , Dener , Gil , Gimenez , Lucas Gomes , Josimar , Kempes , Filipe Machado , Arthur Maia , Marcelo , Bruno Rangel , Cléber Santana , Sergio Manoel , Tiaguinho and Thiego . Three players survived the crash, seriously injured. These are Jakson Follmann , Neto and Alan Ruschel . Ten other players from the Chapecoense squad had stayed in Brazil and were therefore not in the crashed machine. These are Lima , Lourency , Hyoran , Marcelo Boeck , Moisés , Neném , Nivaldo , Cláudio Winck , Demerson and Alejandro Martinuccio .

Goalkeeper Jakson Follmann was amputated part of his right lower leg after his rescue. Left-back Alan Ruschel suffered several broken bones. The defender Neto was stabilized shortly after a harmless brain edema . Goalkeeper Danilo, who saved his team on penalties in the final in the last game, died on the way to the hospital.

The funeral service took place on December 3, 2016 in the Arena Condá. President Michel Temer and FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended 20,000 mourners to bid farewell to the 50 club members, whose coffins were first driven to the stadium in open trucks and then carried inside by soldiers of the Brazilian military.

Since then, fans have been honoring the 71 victims of the aircraft disaster in the 71st minute of every home game with the cry “Vamos, vamos, Chapé!”.

The canceled final of the Copa Sudamericana 2016

The cup final was canceled. However, the stadium in Medellín was filled to the last seat. Atlético Nacional supporters sang the club anthem Semper Chapecó ( Forever Chapecó ) by Chapecoense. "It was 90 minutes of football atmosphere without a ball rolling, perhaps one of the greatest moments in recent sports history."

On December 2, 2016, at the request of Atlético Nacional , the South American football association CONMEBOL declared the club to be the winner of the Copa Sudamericana 2016. Chapecoense, the title holder, will receive two million US dollars. Atlético Nacional was awarded one million US dollars as a fair play award.

Sympathy and support for Chapecoense

In the 2016 championship round, the club would have had to play a game against Atlético Mineiro on the last matchday on December 11th . On December 1, 2016, the president of Mineiro announced that his club would not play for the game.

In addition to global expressions of condolences, all Brazilian top division clubs offered to provide Chapecoense with players on loan for the 2017 season free of charge. In addition, an application was made to protect the club from sporting relegations for three years. This request for protection from relegation was rejected on December 6, 2016 by Ivan Tozzo, the interim president of Chapecoense.

Three days after the accident, an increased number of members was found at the club. Interim President Ivan Tozzo stated on December 1, 2016 that there had been “more than 13,000 inquiries outside of Chapecos in the last 24 hours”.

In November 2017, the WDR reported that the families of the victims criticized the management of the association, stating that only a very small part of the donations raised as a result of the accident actually went to the bereaved.

Building a new team

The already resigned footballers Ronaldinho and Juan Román Riquelme offered themselves as new players. Also offered Eiður Guðjohnsen , a former team-mate Ronaldinho from times when FC Barcelona on, aground for the club.

On December 14, 2016 it was announced that Douglas Grolli would be loaned to Chapecoense by Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte for the 2017 season. This already played in his youth with Chapecoense and recently played no role at Cruzeiro. The loan should last until the end of 2017 and Cruzeiro will take over 80% of Grolli's salary during that time. The player Elias Martello Curzel from EC Juventude was also loaned to Chapecoense until the end of 2017. An option to extend this until the end of 2018 was agreed. Furthermore, Dodô from Atlético Mineiro and Moisés Wolschick from Grêmio Porto Alegre went to Chapecoense on loan.

On March 7, 2017, the new team celebrated their first win (2: 1) after the disaster in the game for the national championship of Santa Catarina against Inter de Lages . On May 7, 2017, the club won the final of the Campeonato Catarinense de Futebol de 2017 - Série A and was able to defend the title of the national championship for the first time. This was - after 1977, 1996, 2007, 2011 and 2016 - the sixth title win of the state championship of the province of Santa Catarina. After the end of the championship round in 2019 , the club had to relegate to Série B as penultimate.
