history
The América Futebol Clube from Belo Horizonte , the capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais , was founded on April 30, 1912 by a group of young men. At the first club meeting the name América FBC was chosen and the club colors were set to green and white. A year later, in 1913, América FBC merged with Minas Gerais FC to form the new club América FC , also known as América Mineiro . The club colors were changed to the colors green, black and white that are valid today. In 1916 the club won its first title, that of the state championship of Minas Gerais . To date one could add fourteen more to this first title win in the state championship. Between 1916 and 1925 alone, this title was won ten times. The last national championship that América Mineiro won was in 2001. In addition to winning fifteen titles, América Mineiro came second thirteen more times.
For many years, the club only played in the state championship of Minas Gerais, as there was no national football league in Brazil until 1971 and only one cup competition existed. In the meantime, the club colors also changed for a short time. In 1933, in protest against the professionalization of Brazilian football, the club's colors were red and white, and in 1943 the old colors were reverted to after the professionalization of their own club. Five years later, in 1948, América Mineiro won its first national championship as a professional club.
América Mineiro is a founding member of the Brazilian Série A , which was held in 1971 for the first time. Between 1971 and 1979, the club played continuously in the first Brazilian soccer league and was mostly placed in the midfield, but sometimes also in the lower part of the table. After relegation from the Série A in 1979, it took until 1993 before you could qualify for the first division again. Previously, they had already been relegated to the Série C , the third highest division. After the 1993 season , the club sued in a civil court in early 1994 against his relegation to the Série B. Due to going to a civil court, the club was excluded from the championship competition for two years. In 1996 he was allowed to compete in Série B again. In 1998 you could play again in Serie A as well as in 2000 and 2001.
In 2011, the club played again in Série A after ten years of abstinence, after a march from Série C to Série A had succeeded. However, they were relegated straight away and have been playing in Série B. Since then, America was able to win the championship in Série B again in the 2017 season and thus celebrate promotion to Série A.
