history
The club was founded after the businessman Amadeu Horn gave a group of young sports enthusiasts a set of shirts. Shortly thereafter, they played against another team called Humaitá and won that game. On September 1, 1923, the association was founded in Amadeu Horn's house. At that time the club was called Avahy Foot-Ball Club. The following year they won the state championship in Santa Catarina.
Avaí played in the Brazilian Premier League four times (1974, 1976, 1977 and 1979) in the 1970s . Then began a long era of the lower class. In 1998 the only national title could be won by winning the championship in the Série C. Since 1999 Avaí played in the second-highest division of Brazil, the Série B. As third in the 2008 season, Avaí made it back to the Série A after 29 years. 2009 achieved a respectable success there with sixth place. After relegation in 2011, the club belonged to the first division again in 2015, 2017 and 2019.
