Álvaro Márcio Santos (born January 31, 1980 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian football player . The striker has played his professional career almost exclusively in Europe and has twice been Danish national champion.

Career

Career start in Northern Europe

Santos moved in 2000 from América Mineiro from Belo Horizonte to the Swedish club Helsingborgs IF in the Allsvenskan . With the reigning champions, he entered the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League and made it to the group stage with the team through victories over BATE Baryssau , to which Santos contributed a goal, and Inter Milan . There he failed with the team as bottom of the table against the eventual winners FC Bayern Munich . In the league he proved to be a regular goalscorer: By the end of his debut season in Sweden, he scored twelve goals this season, which he contributed to the runner-up behind Halmstads BK . Two years later he had a better record with 16 goals this season, as a result of which he finished second in the list of goalscorers for the 2002 season behind Peter Ijeh von Malmö FF , who scored 24 goals . Because of his good scoring rate, he was also noticed outside of Sweden, so that he left the club for Denmark in August 2003.

The reigning Danish champions FC Copenhagen became new employer Santos . Here, too, he shone as a multiple goalscorer and ranked 6th on the list of goalscorers in his first season with 13 goals this season. As the best in-house shooter, he led the club to the fourth championship in the club's history. He was also successful with his club in the 2004/05 Royal League . In the final against the Swedish club IFK Göteborg he was in the starting line-up, but had been substituted prematurely and could not participate in the ultimately successful penalty shootout . In the 2005/06 season he met 15 times during the season, so that he shared second place on the list of goalscorers together with Marcus Allbäck and Mads Junker behind Steffen Højer . Again in the same year he became Swedish champions with the club. He was also successful in the Royal League, with a 1-0 win over Norwegian representative Lillestrøm SK through a goal by Razak Pimpong , he played the entire game. After three years in Denmark, in which he had scored a double-digit number of goals, clubs from southern Europe became interested in his services.

Flying visit to France

After Santos played for FC Copenhagen at the beginning of the following season in qualifying for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League , he moved to France for FC Sochaux at the end of July . Under coach Alain Perrin , he was part of the main lineup in Sturm for much of his first season in Ligue 1 and scored eight goals this season during the season. With the team he moved into the final of the Coupe de France , but there he was not used in the victory over Olympique de Marseille on penalties.

After a coaching change, he was only used as a substitute under Perrin's successor Frédéric Hantz at the beginning of the 2007/08 season . Then he was awarded after three short appearances at the league rivals Racing Strasbourg . Under coach Jean-Marc Furlan , he formed the strike duo of the club from Alsace with the Colombian Wason Rentería . The stay in northeast France was unsuccessful. Not least because he only scored five goals this season, the club was relegated.

After the end of the season Santos returned to FC Sochaux. After injuring himself in the summer training camp and being out for several weeks, he was only one of the supplementary players behind the seeded strikers Nicolas Maurice-Belay and Mevlüt Erdinç under the coach Francis Gillot , who was now signed by the club from Franche-Comté . In winter, the club signed another striker in the form of Czech international Václav Svěrkoš . The players and the club then terminated the contract in early February.

Return to Sweden

After the Gothenburg club Örgryte IS tried unsuccessfully to sign Jonas Wallerstedt from local rivals IFK Göteborg, he entered into negotiations with Santos. Less than a week after his contract termination in France, the Brazilian striker signed a three-year contract in Sweden. In his first competitive game for the club at the local derby against GAIS at the start of the 2009 season, he scored the consolation goal in the 5-1 defeat . A short time later he was injured and there was speculation about a failure for the entire season. After the summer break, however, he returned to the football field as a substitute in July until he had played his way back into the regular formation. He soon showed himself to be dangerous again and was able to score ten goals by the end of the season - despite being sent off in the 2-0 defeat by Trelleborgs FF . Nevertheless, he missed relegation with the team. Despite his seven goals this season in the Superettan , it was enough with the team only to a midfield place.

Santos in November 2013 in Helsingborgs IF's Jersey

In January 2011 Santos returned to the Allsvenskan and signed a loan deal with Gothenburg local rivals GAIS . In the first half of the 2011 season he ran for the club and was the second-best club-internal goalscorer behind Mervan Çelik guarantor that the team of coach Alexander Axén placed in the top third of the table at half-time. During the summer transfer period , however, he changed clubs and returned to his first play station in Europe. The 31-year-old signed a three-year contract at Helsingborgs IF.

With a goal in nine league games, Santos contributed to winning the championship title by the end of the 2011 season . In the following season he was only second choice behind the loan players Alfreð Finnbogason and Nikola Đurđić , even after their departure he was mainly a substitute in the 2013 season . With five goals this season, he was behind David Accam , Mattias Lindström , Robin Simović and Imad Khalili , who was signed up in late summer and the Allsvenskan top scorer at the end of the season, the fifth-best club scorer. At the same time, the club was already discussing post-retirement tasks in the organization.

When his contract expired at the end of 2014, Santos initially ended his active career in order to devote himself to setting up his own football school in his home country of Brazil.

Started as a trainer

In the 2017 season, Santos worked as an assistant coach at U17 Helsingborgs IF . Since 2018 he has been the main coach of this youth team. At the same time, he resumed playing in the amateur field and joined Hittarps IK for three months in September 2017 in order to play for the fourth division until the end of the year. In the 2018 season he was under contract with the fifth division club Höganäs BK .
