Václav Svěrkoš [ ˈsvjɛrkɔ̹ʃ ] (born November 1, 1983 in Třinec , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech soccer player who played for the Czech national soccer team until 2010.

Career

In the club

Svěrkoš started playing football at VP Frýdek-Místek at the age of seven . In 1998, when he was 14, he moved to Baník Ostrava . In 2003, the offensive player went to Borussia Mönchengladbach for 1.5 million euros .

In the winter break of the 2005/06 season he moved to Hertha BSC on loan , but remained there unsuccessfully and goalless. On July 1, 2006, he returned to Mönchengladbach. At Borussia, however, he did not succeed in earning a regular place.

In January 2007 he was loaned to Austria Wien for six months . He won the 2006/07 ÖFB Cup with the Austrians . For the 2007/08 season Svěrkoš moved to his former club Baník Ostrava . With 15 goals he was the top scorer of the Gambrinus League 2007/08 . From 2009 he played in the French Ligue 1 at FC Sochaux . In January 2011 he was loaned to Panionios Athens in Greece for six months until June 2011 .

For the 2011/12 season Svěrkoš moved back to Baník Ostrava , where he signed a five-year contract.

In the national team

Svěrkoš went through all the national teams of the Czech Republic, from the U-15 juniors to the U-21 selection , in which he was team captain . In the senior team, the striker made his debut on May 27, 2008 in the game against Lithuania . In the second half he played for the substituted Milan Baroš . Svěrkoš scored the first goal of the 2008 European Football Championship on June 7, 2008 in a 1-0 win against Switzerland in Basel .

Private

In April 2008 his partner Jana gave birth to a daughter.
