Czech football championship 1995/96

The 1st fotbalová liga 1996/97 ( 1st football league 1996/97 ) was the fourth season of the top Czech league in football . It was held from August 9, 1996 to June 11, 1997 with a winter break from December 2, 1996 to February 22, 1997.

16 teams played against each other twice on a total of 30 match days, divided into a first half and a second half.

Sparta Prague secured their third Czech championship on the penultimate matchday. While Sparta won their home game against Sigma Olmütz on matchday 29, they benefited from the simultaneous defeat of local rivals Slavia in Jablonec .

Runner-up and defending champion Sparta Prague won the Czech Cup and took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup. FK Jablonec and Boby Brno qualified third and fourth for the UEFA Cup, respectively .

FC Karviná and Bohemians Prague in 1905 were relegated to the Druhá fotbalová liga .
