Vlastimil Petržela (born July 20, 1953 in Prostějov , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak football player and current football coach of Baník Ostrava .

Player career

The two-time Czechoslovak national player began his career with Sokol Kraslice na Hané, later he played for TJ OP Prostějov. FC Zbrojovka Brno signed him for the 1974/75 season . From 1976 to 1978 the striker played for Železárny Prostějov , from 1978 to 1980 for Sigma Olomouc . He did his army service between 1980 and 1981 at RH Cheb . Then "Burda", as Petržela was called, played for Slavia Prague . Without international experience he was nominated for the World Cup in Spain in 1982, on June 17, 1982 he made his debut as a substitute in the World Cup group game against Kuwait in the Czechoslovak national team. On March 7, 1983, at 1-1 in Cyprus , Petržela had his second and last appearance in the national team, this time he played over 90 minutes. In 1985 he ended his career at the age of only 32 due to injury problems, even if he played a few times for the lower class Prague club TJ Cholupice.

Coaching career

Vlastimil Petržela began his coaching career in the 1986/87 season as an assistant at Slavia Prague . On the 12th game day he took over the post of head coach, but returned in 1987/88 to the assistant post. In the spring of 1990 he got another chance to prove his qualities as head coach, but had little success. The team slipped from the already disappointing eighth place to tenth. Nevertheless, he continued to gain confidence. In 1990/91 the team finished ninth, 1991/92 fourth. In 1992/93 he was dismissed after the 7th matchday, the team had only won three times by then.

In 1993/94 he was coach at Slovan Liberec , in the first season under Petržela Liberec was ninth, 1994/95 fourth. At the beginning of 1996 he was signed by Sparta Prague , but he was unsuccessful there. After the 5th match day in 1996/97 he was released.

On the 12th day of the season he took over local rivals Bohemians Prague , but could not prevent relegation to the 2nd division. 1997/98 Bohemians was only third in the 2nd division and missed promotion. The club's management stuck to Petržela, the team took first place on the 1998/99 season and rose. After a seventh (1999/2000) and an eighth place (2000/01), Bohemians and Petržela parted after the 27th matchday 2001/02 due to internal difficulties, although the team was in fourth place.

For the 2002/03 season Petržela took over the then second division club FK Mladá Boleslav .

At the beginning of 2003 he accepted the offer from Zenit St. Petersburg , where he spent three and a half successful years. In his first year he led Zenit to the Russian runner-up, in 2004 the team finished fourth and in 2005 sixth. In 2006, Zenit reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup . He was released in May 2006 after falling out with the new owners and having some players against him.

At the end of August 2006 Petržela took over the coaching position at Sigma Olomouc , after the season he was dismissed. In August 2007 he became a coach at Neftçi Baku . He was released in January 2007 after just four months.

In 2009/10 Petržela worked as coach of the Prague second division club FK Viktoria Žižkov , in the following season 2010/11 then as coach of the Slovakian MFK Zemplín Michalovce .
