Czech football championship 1993/94

The 1st fotbalová liga 1994/95 ( 1st football league 1994/95 ) was the second season of the top Czech league in football . It was held from August 5, 1994 to June 11, 1995 with a winter break from November 28, 1994 to February 23, 1995.

16 teams played against each other twice over a total of 30 match days, divided into a first half and a second half. For the first time there were three points for a win instead of two, one for a draw and no point for a defeat .

The relegated of the 1993/94 season , FC Vítkovice Kovkor and Dukla Prague were replaced by the two promoted FK Jablonec and FK Švarc Benešov .

Sparta Prague was able to defend its title from last season. Second place went to Slavia Prague again . Bohemians Prague and newly promoted Švarc Benešov had to relegate .

The top scorer was Radek Drulák from Petra Drnovice with 15 goals . The striker had returned from Germany and shot his way into the Czech national team . The future midfield star Karel Poborský , who had moved from SK České Budějovice to cup winner Viktoria Žižkov before the season , scored ten goals .

Championship course

The 1994/95 season will be remembered mainly because of the race to catch up from Sparta Prague in the second half of the season. During the winter break, Sparta was only in fifth place, seven points behind leaders Slavia. In the end, last year's champions were six points ahead of Slavia. Sparta won the derby in April with a goal from 22-year-old Pavel Nedvěd in the 90th minute of the game. The winner used the manager Jozef Chovanec , who actually ended his career in October.

The 1994/95 game year brought two rule changes. On the one hand, there were now three points for a win, on the other hand, three players could now be changed per match instead of two previously.

Several clubs initially played their home games on foreign pitches because they were rebuilding their stadiums. Sparta Prague played in the Evžena Rošického stadium , Petra Drnovice in Vyškov , Slovan Liberec in the city's second stadium, the so-called Městský Stadium and the SK Hradec Králové in Třebechovice pod Orebem . Sparta opened the modernized Letná stadium on September 9, 1993 with the derby against Slavia.

The two promoted from the second division were the FK Jablonec and the FK Švarc Benešov. Benešov had a steep ascent - thanks to the patron and sponsor Miroslav Švarc. The contractor got financial problems during the season and his club was relegated from bottom of the table. Jablonec, on the other hand, ended the year in a secure midfield. Bohemians Prague accompanied Benešov in the 2nd division.

At the top, the season began with coach damage. Before the first day of play, Slavia dismissed coach Jindřich Dejmal and replaced him with Miroslav Beránek . Sparta put Karol Dobiaš on leave after two victories because the team had allegedly not convinced in terms of play. Jozef Chovanec and the previous assistant coach Vladimír Borovička took over the team for a short time; In mid-October, the record champions hired the German coach Jürgen Sundermann . However, he fell out with President Petr Mach, who dismissed the trainer in March. For the last ten games Jozef Jarabinský took over and led Sparta to the second Czech championship in a row.

Sparta overtook their eternal rivals on Matchday 25, but only because of the better goal difference . Slavia screwed up the end of the season completely. On the penultimate match day, the team lost in Liberec - the decision in the championship race had been made.

The Benešov patron Švarc caused a big bang after the season ended. The entrepreneur announced that the arbitrators were corrupted. He didn't want to name any names, however, and the prosecution's investigations came to nothing, witnesses suddenly couldn't remember anything or withdrew their statements. Švarc followed up on his threat and withdrew from football. Benešov descended year after year; In 1996 the team was finally disbanded.
