Petr Kouba (born January 28, 1969 in Prague ) is a former Czech football player and current goalkeeping coach.

Career

The goalkeeper played in his youth for Slavoj Vyšehrad and Bohemians Prague , at Bohemians he also made the jump to the first team. In early 1991, local rival Sparta Prague signed the young talent.

On January 30 of the same year, Kouba made his debut in the Czechoslovak national team . In the next few years he was a regular goalkeeper at Sparta. His breakthrough on the international scene came at the 1996 European Championship in England, where the Czech national team made it to the final. In this, the Czechs finally lost to Germany through a goalkeeping error by Kouba. For around 1.6 million euros, Kouba moved to Deportivo La Coruña , where he was never able to assert himself, not least because of his foreign status. In his first season he only played four games and was loaned to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 1997/98 season, where he was supposed to replace Andreas Reinke as the regular goalkeeper. However, Kouba could not prevail in the Palatinate either, was injured and did not play a single Bundesliga competitive game. He was banned for four weeks for doping .

Kouba still had a contract in La Coruña and was loaned to Viktoria Žižkov in the 1998/99 season, for which he played 23 games. He returned to Spain but only made two appearances in two seasons for the Galician team . In 2001 he moved to FK Jablonec for free , for whom he was in goal in 19 games. Then Kouba returned to his former club Sparta Prague, but did not get beyond three missions due to his injury problems.

In the summer of 2005 he ended his career and became a goalkeeping coach at Sparta.
