Club history

Viktoria Pilsen rose to the top Czechoslovak league for the first time in 1931 and stayed there until 1938. The best place was a third place in 1933. A renewed promotion was achieved in 1945, followed by relegation in 1952, and again third place in the 1947 season was the best result. Pilsen gave further guest performances in 1961/62, 1962/63, 1967/68 and 1970/71.

This season the club won the Czech cup competition. In the first leg of the final it was only enough at home to draw against the B-team from Sparta Prague . When after a 3: 3 in the second leg in Prague the penalty shoot-out ended 5: 5, the lot Škoda Plzeň determined the winner. In the final of the Czechoslovak Cup, Škoda Plzeň had no chance against Spartak Trnava , but since the Slovaks had also become champions, Škoda Plzeň had the right to start as an inferior finalist in the European Cup Winners' Cup , and that as a second division. The opponent in the first round was Bayern Munich . In Pilsen, the team led by Franz Beckenbauer won 1-0, in the second leg FC Bayern defeated Škoda Plzeň by a clear 6-1.

Only from 1972 could Škoda Plzeň establish itself a little longer in the first division, the next relegation followed in 1980. 1985 the club was back in the first division. The descent was followed by an immediate ascent in 1988 and this again by an immediate descent.

In 1993 Viktoria Pilsen qualified as third in the 2nd division for the Czech 1st division, in whose first season the team took an excellent fifth place. After various midfield placements in 1999 came relegation to the 2nd division. As in the mid- 1980s , Pilsen became an elevator crew . In 2000 the team was promoted, only to be relegated immediately. The next promotion followed in 2003, but this time too Viktoria was only able to stay in the House of Lords for one season.

In 2005, the club unexpectedly managed the next promotion. After the withdrawal of 1. FK Drnovice from the first division, a third place was enough to qualify for the Gambrinus League . In the 2009/10 season, the club qualified as the Czech cup winner for the third qualifying round for the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League . There you failed, however, on the Turkish team from Beşiktaş Istanbul . In 2010 the entrepreneur Tomáš Paclík took ownership of the association. In the 2010/11 season Viktoria Pilsen was Czech football champion for the first time. The captain and playmaker Pavel Horváth and coach Pavel Vrba played an important role. Both are considered club legends.

Viktoria Pilsen started as champions in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and was eliminated after finishing third in the Champions League group stage in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League , not until the round of 16 in 2012/13. Viktoria Pilsen became Czech champions again in the 2012/13 season and was eliminated from the Champions League the following season after the group stage. In the 2013/14 season Viktoria Pilsen was runner-up and reached the cup final; in both competitions they were left behind against Sparta Prague. In the 2014/15 season, the team was eliminated in the third qualifying round for the Europa League . In 2014/15 they became champions again. After Miroslav Koubek failed to qualify with the team for the group stage of the Champions League and the results in the league did not meet expectations, there was a dismissal and Karel Krejčí was introduced as the new coach. He immediately qualified for the group stage of the Europa League after being kicked out in the play-offs FK Vojvodina Novi Sad . There the Pilsner were eliminated as third party.

At the end of the 2015/16 season Viktoria Pilsen managed to win the championship and then prevailed against Qarabağ Ağdam in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League , but was eliminated in the play-offs against Ludogorez Razgrad . In the group stage of the UEFA Europa League Viktoria Plzen was eliminated again as third party. In the league, the Pilsen runners-up behind Slavia Prague and then eliminated in the third qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League against FCSB Bucharest , prevailing in the play-offs for the UEFA Europa League against AEK Larnaka . As a result, they were group winners and were only eliminated in the round of 16 against Sporting Lisbon . In 2018 Viktoria Pilsen was again champion and qualified directly for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League by placing the Czech league in the UEFA five-year ranking . The Pilsner were eliminated in third place behind defending champions Real Madrid and last year's semi- finalists AS Roma , but took part in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League and were eliminated from Dinamo Zagreb . In 2019 Viktoria Pilsen had to give way to Slavia Prague again in the championship fight.
