The Doosan Arena is a football stadium in the West Bohemian city of Pilsen . Until November 2011, the venue was called Stadion města Plzně ( German  Stadium of the City of Pilsen ), before the South Korean conglomerate Doosan became name sponsor . The football club Viktoria Pilsen plays its home games here. Colloquially it is called Stadion ve Štruncových sadech ( German  Stadion im Štrunc Park ).

After the renovation in 2011, the total capacity was 13,000, including 11,700 seats. In addition, the stadium was converted into a pure football stadium without an athletics facility.

history

Construction of the stadium in the Štruncovy sady city park began in 1953, and it was completed two years later. The capacity was 25,000 spectators. The architects of the project were B. Kavan and J. Brabec from Stavoprojekt Plzeň .

The only international football match to date in the Štruncových sadech stadium took place on April 26, 1972. In a friendly match, Czechoslovakia defeated the team from Luxembourg 6-0 in front of 5,000 spectators.

In 1997 the capacity increased to 35,000, of which 7600 were covered seats in the stands, and turf heating was installed. A year later a running track was installed; Since then, athletics events have been held regularly in the stadium , for example the Czech Championships in 2004.

In 2002 the stadium was badly damaged by floods , after which it was completely renovated. Some of the standing room was cordoned off, and plastic seat shells were installed in other areas, including the main stand. The capacity sank to about 7500 places. The stadium consisted of a covered main stand and uncovered seats in the rest of the area.

On May 6, 2007, an American football match between the Pilsen Patriots and the Liberec Highlanders took place in the stadium .

During the renovation in 2011, three grandstands were demolished, the main grandstand was the only one that remained and was only partially renovated. During the renovation, Viktoria Pilsen played its international games in the Synot Tip Arena in Prague. The first game in the finished stadium was the UEFA Europa League sixteenth-final first leg against FC Schalke 04 on February 16, 2012 , which ended 1: 1.

With the renovation work from 2015 to 2016, the modernization of the stadium was completed. From 2011 to 2016 a total of 508 million CZK (around 19.8 million euros ) was invested in the renovation. The stadium currently offers 11,700 covered seats.
