From 2001 to 2010 he played 93 times for the Brazilian national team . Gilberto Silva of the Seleção took part in three world championships ( 2002 , 2006 , 2010 ) and became world champion in 2002. He also won in 2007 , the Copa America and in 2005 and 2009 the Confed Cup .

Career

In the club

Adolescence

Gilberto Silva grew up in a poor working-class family with his parents and three sisters. At the age of twelve he got the chance to escape a future full of poverty when he went to América Mineiro with the hope of a professional career , but the time was marked with many setbacks, as he had to stop playing football again and again in order to survive Family to work. At the age of 15, he left the club for three years to work in a local candy factory, and then at 18, hoping that it would work this time, to enroll in the youth center. However, his mother soon became so ill that he soon returned to his family to earn a living for them.

Professional career

In 1997, at the age of almost 21, his friends convinced him to try his luck with football again. He was soon playing as a center-back in the first team of America Mineiro, became a key player and rose with the team in 1997 in the first division. Despite the imminent descent he remained loyal to the association and helped him to return to the Series A .

In 2000 Gilberto Silva moved to big local rivals Atlético Mineiro , where he broke his shin in his first season and played only a few games. The next season was his big break. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira put him on the defensive midfield and showed very good performances, which even earned him the nomination for the Brazilian national team .

After the 2002 World Cup , where he confirmed his good performance from the previous season, Gilberto Silva moved to the reigning English champions FC Arsenal for the 2002/03 season for £ 4.5 million . He made his debut on August 11 at the FA Community Shield , where he came on in the second half and scored the winning goal against Liverpool . He was able to confirm his good start at Arsenal with the goal in the Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven , which until Roy Makaay broke his record in 2007 when he was the fastest goal scored in this competition with 20.07 seconds. However, in his first season for Arsenal he played only very mixed, which was also due to problems due to the changed life in a metropolis like London . In the 2003/04 season he became a regular player and one of the pillars in the undefeated Arsenal championship team. But in the following season Gilberto Silva was injured for seven months and lost his regular place in the team. He played a total of only 13 Premier League games in which he did not score any league goals. But with the departure of Patrick Vieira he became a regular player again and was allowed to wear the captain's armband for the first time in the Champions League match against Sparta Prague . Especially in the important games against Real Madrid , Juventus Turin and FC Villarreal on the way to the Champions League final against FC Barcelona , which was lost 1: 2, he performed outstandingly and thus aroused the interest of several clubs such as the AC Milan and Olympique Lyon . But he stayed with Arsenal and was vice-captain behind Thierry Henry . He thanked this with a very strong season in which he was often team captain due to Henry's injury and set a personal record with 10 goals this season in the league. But the next season was accompanied by several low points. After Henry's departure to Barcelona , it seemed almost certain that he would be the new captain, but in the end, to his disappointment, Wenger chose William Gallas . In addition, Gilberto lost his place in the first team to Mathieu Flamini right from the start , triggering renewed rumors of change. But Wenger forbade a move and made it clear to him that he had to fight for his place. The final break came in October 2007 when Gilberto played in the English League Cup against Sheffield United with his own hands in defensive midfield, although he had the task of playing in central defense from Arsene Wenger. From now on he played less and less and at the end of the season came to only 23 league appearances, where he was only substituted in eleven games.

In the summer of 2008 he signed a three-year contract with the Greek top club Panathinaikos Athens and ended the Arsenal chapter. The Brazilian made his competitive debut at the new club in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round against Dinamo Tbilisi . He changed coach Henk ten Cate in the 50th minute for Sotiris Ninis . At Panathinaikos he became a regular again and played 29 games in his first season in which he scored 3 goals. He also reached the last sixteen of the Champions League with his team, in which, however, they were knocked out 1: 1 and 1: 2 against the Spanish representative Villarreal . In the championship, however, they only reached a third place. It was not until 2010 that Gilberto was able to celebrate the Greek championship with the Athenians . By winning the cup , the double was finally made perfect.

National team

Gilberto Silva made his debut for the Brazilian national team just eight months before the 2002 World Cup . He celebrated his premiere in the national jersey in the World Cup qualifier against Bolivia on November 7, 2001 . In the 1: 3 defeat, the midfielder was in the starting line-up and was substituted for Vampeta in the 62nd minute . He was then coach Luiz Felipe Scolari for the World Championship tournament in the squad called the Brazilian. Due to the injury of his compatriot and regular Emerson, Gilberto moved up to one of the pillars of the team during the competition. In addition to captain Cafu , Lúcio and goalkeeper Marcos , the defensive player was the only player who did not miss a minute of the tournament. Finally the team secured the victory and became world champion in 2002. Three years later Gilberto took part in the Confederations Cup in 2005 , and a year later in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and 2010 in South Africa . In July 2007, as captain of the Brazilians, he led the team to win the Copa America .

Gilberto has completed 93 international matches since 2001, sixteen of them at world championships.
