Lagoa da Prata (German silver lagoon , officially Portuguese Município de Lagoa da Prata ) is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais .

Lagoa da Prata is west of Santo Antônio do Monte and southwest of Bom Despacho . The capital of the state of Belo Horizonte is a good 200 km away in the east. To the west of the city rises National Park Serra da Canastra , which since 1998 on the Tentative List for World Heritage is. From there, the Rio São Francisco rises to the north , while the Furnas reservoir dams the Rio Grande in the southwest .

history

The place was settled in 1789 by gold miners from the Rio São Francisco, established in 1896 as São Carlos do Pântano , in 1923 under its current name it became a district of Santo Antônio do Monte and on December 27, 1938 it was finally an independent city. Today it has around 51,600 inhabitants, more than twice as many as Santo Antônio do Monte and also more than Bom Despacho, which until 1912 was also the district of the now smaller Santo Antônio do Monte. Together with 11 other municipalities, it belonged to the statistical-geographical microregion Bom Despacho from 1989 to 2017 .

It ranks 71st of the 853 cities of Minas Gerais. The inhabitants are called Lago-Pratenser (Portuguese lago-pratenses ). According to the 2010 IBGE census, the population was 45,984. The number was estimated by the IBGE as of July 1, 2018 at 51,601 residents. The area is given as around 440 km² (as of 2018). The population density in 2010 was around 105 inhabitants / km². They concentrate on the urban area of ​​the district of Lagoa da Prata with the capital of the same name, a second district is the district of Martins Guimarães .

Agriculturally, the region is surrounded by sugar cane plantations, and industrially by the Louis Dreyfus Group . In terms of tourism, the lagoon has received artificial beaches over the past 50 years. The place tries to promote ecotourism .

In 2017, the monthly average income was 2.2 times the Brazilian minimum wage ( Salário mínimo ) of R $ 880.00, which corresponds to a total of around 458 euros in 2019. The Human Development Index (HDI) is already rated high at 0.732 for 2010. The gross national product of economic output per capita in 2016 was R $ 27,161.
