The Furnas Reservoir ( Portuguese Represa de Furnas or Lago de Furnas ) is one of the largest reservoirs in Brazil . The Furnas power plant (Port. Usina Hidrelétrica de Furnas ) dams the Rio Grande and thereby creates the reservoir. The dam stands between the cities of São José da Barra and São João Batista do Glória in Minas Gerais .
Reservoir
The reservoir, which is also called the Sea of Minas (Port. Mar de Minas ) because of its size , has a water surface of around 1,440 km² and a shoreline of 3500 km. Other data speak of an area of 1320, 1458 or 1600 km². There are also several specifications for the content of the traffic jam: 20,900, 21,000, 22,950 or 23,000 million cubic meters. In any case, the reservoir is one of the largest on earth.
The reservoir is dammed up by an earth dam (Barragem de Furnas) whose height is 96, 120 or 127 m and whose length is 554, 600 to 779 m. (There are also different specifications for this.)
power plant
The hydropower plant has a nominal output of 1,216 MW (8 times 152 MW) and is operated by Furnas Centrais Elétricas . Construction work began in July 1958 and the first machine unit went into operation in 1963.
