Cape Canaveral AFS Launch Complex 16 (LC-16) is a disused launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Merritt Island , Cape Canaveral in Florida , USA . The new Terran 1 should start from there from 2021 .

history

The launch pad was originally built along with the LC-15 , LC-19 and LC-20 for the US Air Force's Titan missions in early 1959. Thus, on December 12, 1959, a Titan I took off from this launch site. But even this first launch failed because the rocket exploded a few meters above the launch site.

The next year, 1960, another five Titan I launched, with only two missions being successful. As a result, LC-16 was only used for the Titan II for the next few years . The first of seven Titan II launches was a success; the rocket flew 8000 km across the Atlantic. The next Titan II launches took place by May 29, 1962. There were three failures.

After the Titan program for this ramp was discontinued, the Air Force handed the complex over to NASA in January 1965 . In the next few years, it was able to carry out tests such as the engine of the Apollo service module on this launch site . After the tests, the complex was returned to the US Air Force.

From 1974 to 1988, the launch pad of which was US Army for Development of flights Pershing - medium-range missile used. Due to the decommissioning of the Pershing missiles as part of the INF treaty , LC-16 was decommissioned in 1988.

The complex

Until the conversion for the Pershing rockets, the launch site was very similar to its "brothers" from 1959: There was a fixed tower and a movable service tower that was swiveled back before launch. The special thing about the launch site, however, was the " Suiting Trailer ", in which the astronauts were put on the launch suit so that they could take off from the neighboring LC-19.
