Cape Canaveral AFS Launch Complex 14 (LC-14) is a disused launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station near Merritt Island , Cape Canaveral in Florida , USA . It was used between 1957 and 1966 for a total of 32 Atlas rocket launches , including all manned orbital flights in the Mercury program . On April 16, 1984, LC-14 was declared a National Historic Landmark as part of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station .
history
Launch Complex 14 was built in the 1950s to test the Atlas ballistic missile. After the Atlas rocket was selected as the carrier for the manned Gemini orbital flights, all Mercury Atlas flights were launched from this platform. The ballistic flights with the Redstone missile took place from Launch Complex 5 . After the Mercury program was completed, the launch platform was rebuilt and all Agena target levels as part of the Gemini program were launched from here .
The last launch of a rocket from Launch Complex 14 took place on November 11, 1966 with the docking adapter for the Gemini-12 mission.
After the last take-off , the facilities began to corrode and disintegrate , encouraged by the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean . In the 1970s, the launch platform was dismantled for safety reasons.
