Cape Canaveral AFS Launch Complex 19 (LC-19) is a decommissioned NASA launch pad that is part of the ICBM launch pad group and belongs to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station . It is located on Cape Canaveral in Florida , USA .

history

Start of Gemini 3

LC-19 was built together with launch sites 15 , 16 , and 20 in early 1959.

The first launch took place on August 14, 1959. However, the Titan-1 rocket exploded on the launch pad. Another 14 Titan-1 were launched in the next few years, two of which were unsuccessful.

The first Titan-2 with Gemini 1 took off on April 8, 1964. As with the Gemini 2 , there were no people on board yet; one wanted to observe this new launch system (Titan 2 with Gemini spaceship) first.

After these two test flights, Gemini 3 was finally able to take off on March 23 with Virgil Grissom and John Young . This was followed by Gemini 4 to Gemini 12 . Then the launch pad was shut down.

Since these milestones in space travel, the ramp has been falling apart. The launch tower was removed; the service structure is rusting. The White Room through which the astronauts boarded the Gemini spacecraft has been restored and can be viewed in the “CCAFS Space and Missile Museum”.

The complex

Swinging away the service structure

The launch pad is on an artificially elevated level. An immovable tower supplied the rocket with fuel, among other things. Next to her is a slightly larger service tower on which the White Room was located. This was folded into a vertical position so that the astronauts could climb into the spaceship. Before the start it was put back into the horizontal parking position.

Next to the launch pad is the “block house”. It was the mission control center.
