The Space Launch Complex 20 ( SLC-20 ; formerly Launch complex 20 , LC-20) is a rocket launch site operated by Space Florida on the premises of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) in Florida , USA . On the SLC-20 is a launching pad for was ICBMs , which was used by all of these ramps on the CCAFS longest. In the future, the Firefly Alpha will start from there .
history
The launch site was built in early 1959 together with the LC-15 , LC-16 and LC-19 for Titan missions.
On July 1, 1960, the first LC-20 rocket launched. It was a Titan-I missile, but it exploded 90 meters above the ramp. In the following months, another 15 Titan I started from here. After that, the complex was converted so that Titan IIIA can start. In the following years four missiles of the mentioned missile type flew. From May 6, 1964, the launch pad stood still for several years.
The complex was completely rebuilt. Old systems and structures were removed; new electronics and systems for smaller missiles were built on the site. A second launch pad was also built. Since the launch of a Starbird rocket on December 18, 1990, the LC-20 has only launched sounding rockets .
