Halmaheramys is a genus of rodents from the group of old world mice (Murinae). The genus includes two species, Halmaheramys bokimekot , whichliveson the Indonesian island of Halmahera , and Halmaheramys wallacei , which occurs on the Obi islands of Bisa and Obira .

features

The animals reach a head-trunk length of 14.3 to 24.1 cm, a tail length of 12.0 to 21 cm, a weight of 72 to 300 g and have a habitus adapted to a terrestrial (ground-dwelling) life . The tail has an average length of around 80% of the length of the head and is therefore significantly shorter than the head and body combined. The fur on the back and the top of the head is black-brown to gray. The hair is thick and bristly. The peritoneum is whitish-gray and coarse. The transition between the fur on the back and the peritoneum is clearly visible. The muzzle is medium long and narrow. The incisors in the upper and lower jaw have an orange enamel and are frontless without grooves. The first upper molar has five roots, the second four and the third three. The first lower molar has four roots, the second and third three. The third molar is small compared to the others. The molars are brachydont and narrow. The occlusion patterns are simple. The ears are dark brown to gray. The tail is brown with a short white tip. The skin flakes on the tail are square and large. Three bristly hairs are associated with a scale. The hind feet are long and slender. The toes and the tops of the front and rear feet are white. Females have three pairs of teats , one behind the armpits and two in the groin region. They have at least three young animals per birth.
