Santo Antônio do Monte (officially Portuguese Município de Santo Antônio do Monte , known as Samonte ) is a small town in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . The population was according to the 2010 census of the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) 25,975 inhabitants, called Santo-Antonienser or Samonter. The population estimate of the IBGE from July 1, 2019 amounts to 28,243 residents in an area of ​​1,125.78 km 2 . The place is 194 kilometers from the capital Belo Horizonte . It ranks 127th out of the state's 853 municipalities.

history

The area of ​​today's Santo Antônio do Monte was settled in the 18th century by Portuguese, mainly from the Azores, who initially found a home in Pitangui .

City administration

The executive branch lies with the city prefecture. Since the local elections in 2012, Wilmar de Oliveira Filho of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) has been city prefect for the 2013-2016 term.
