Remarks:

  • Ricardinho was called up for captain Emerson , who stood in goal during a training match the day before the Brazilians' first game and dislocated his shoulder.
  • The originally scheduled Djalminha was not taken into account as he headed his coach Javier Irureta at Deportivo La Coruña five days before the nomination .

Preliminary round

Brazil were high favorites in a group that otherwise consisted of newbies and outsiders. With three wins and an impressive goal difference of 11: 3, they took first place undisputed. Only the game against Turkey could only be won by an unjustified penalty. The unsportsmanlike highlight of this group was an ugly acting performance by Rivaldo, whom Hakan Ünsal had shot in the leg outside of the field. Rivaldo rolled over on the floor, contorted with pain, and indicated that he had been hit in the head. The Turk received the red card , Rivaldo got away with a fine of 8,000 euros for this unsporting behavior.

Finals

In the round of 16 they prevailed against Belgium with a lot of effort and a little luck. Then came the game against co-favorites England, which stood on the knife edge for a long time but was won in the end. The outstanding player was Ronaldinho, who prepared the 1-1 with a solo run and scored the 2-1 with a remarkable free kick himself. In the semi-finals they met Turkey again. The game was decided by a goal by Ronaldo. Brazil was in the final. Opponent there was Germany, with which the two teams with the most World Cup games met for the first time at a World Cup.

In pouring rain, both teams competed on June 30, 2002 in Yokohama for the final of the 2002 World Cup. Germany had more possession of the ball (56%: 44%) and more corners (13: 3), but the Brazilians played the bigger chances, but could not overcome the German defense for a long time. Only a mistake by Oliver Kahn , who could not hold a ball that was not too sharp, made it possible for Ronaldo to make it 1-0. Ronaldo also scored the goal to make it 2-0 and Brazil was world champion and had won the title at least once on every continent on which the World Cup finals had taken place up to then.

  • With Ronaldo, Brazil provided the World Cup top scorer for the fourth time.
  • Brazil, like the second and third placed teams, was the first team to play in seven cities.
